So, what are you losing, spark or fuel?

If you don't know how to answer the question, you need to take the car to the shop.

Since the engine starts we know that the speed and reference sensors are good. We also know that the fuel and spark are OK. What you need to verify is that the Air Flow Meter is working properly, because this sounds like a classic case for a bad/disconnected AFM.

For some backround: When you turn the key to the 'Start' position, power goes to the DME, Fuel Pump, instrument cluster and the starter motor. When the engine RPM reaches 200 RPM, the DME fires the injectors and spark plugs, and the engine starts running. Shortly there after the DME 'polls' the AFM for a valid load signal. If the DME does not see a load signal the DME shuts the engine down.

Put a fuel pressure gauge on the fuel rail - see if you are having a supply pressure problem.

u didn't leave a rag stuffed in the exhaust, 20 secs is just about how long it would run before being choked to death.

I had something similar. Only it would run about a mile before shutting down and sometimes would be OK for a couple of days. Turned out to be a bad DME. A bad solder joint can warm up and "open". I put a timing light (all us old guys have these from the old ignition point days) on the #1 plug and watched the spark go away when the engine died.

Make sure you are getting power to the MAF. Check the voltage +12V at the MAF connector (red wire).
