I recently installed a VDO Boost/Vac gauge. I just thought I would warn you that the total gauge length is unusually long. The threaded shaft for the vac tubing connection is about 1.25" long 'after' the rear of the case, add c ase length, connectors, and you get the picture. I had to actually cut the back off of a nice pod I had bought because it was about 3/4" too short. I would think this would be a very tight fit in a pillar pod but haven't tried it yet. I ended up having to do a 90 deg. bend in the tubing just to clear the instrument cluster. You might want to see if other VDO mechanical gauges are built this way. Installed in the radio cubby would be no problem though.

Zero. The VDO Vision is this on I do not know why you got that picture.

Kuhl. It is very possible the boost/vac wont fit in the a-pillar. I already have a boost gauge that "looks" like VDO so im happy hahah.

Firstly... Group buy.... Make sure you run this through John D.

Now sensor is what? As for gauges there are probably 25 or 30 different types of oil temp gauges in various different sizes.

Are you taking mechanical or electric. My only question is sender and how it will go in.

(Now I just saw the other post about the sender.. .. Sorry guys )

Reall that gauge looks good to me... Count me infor the gauge too.

here is the page for the exact gauges we are getting for the oil. http://www.egauges.com/vdo_mult.asp?...s=Vision&Cart=

The oil temp gauge 300* is 25$ and we are trying to get a discounted price.

I'd like to have two VDO gauges. I thought I read somewhere that a mechanical VDO boot guage might be too deep for the lotec pod. Anybody have a VDO boost gauge + lotec pod?

Now I'm worried they list the wrong part number.
Zero10, you are right - I was looking at a different gauge. It seems the 310-512 is exactly as you've described, with "Engine Oil" written on it.

The 10-180 Ohm sender is the one we are using.

Can anyone clarify the ease of hookup for the oil temp guage? Does it use the existing sensor, yada yada. I'm interested but would like additional info. for a non-mechanic type.

Oh, also, what's the optimal oil temp when the car is "warmed up" in the morning and during normal driving?

Scott, hookup is pretty straightforward. The drain plugs I am making have an electrical sending unit in the middle of them. You pull your drain plug at your next oil change, replace it with the new one, connect a wire with a standard female blade terminal on the end to the drain plug and run this wire into the car's interior and hook it up to the sending unit terminal on the back of the gauge. The gauge also needs switched power and a ground wire hooked up to it. These details are all covered in detail in the instructions that come with the gauge.

My 951 registers about 180-190 degrees oil temp on the highway when the oil cooler and engine is getting lots of airflow. In stop and go driving on a hot day, or when riding hard in the mountains, the gauge goes up to 220 degrees. For what its worth...

what it does it the sensor (the oil drain plug sensor that Brad is making) is just a resistor. The hotter the oil the less resistance. The gauge just uses one wire that runs down to the sensor. As it gets less resistance the gauge temp reads up. It pretty simple but very accurate. Thank you VDO.
