I picked up a used fender at a salvage yard yesterday, off an S2. I want to put it on my car today or tomorrow, but I have a couple questions first.
When I bought the fender, it still had that sticky tarish sealant on the edges of the panel. I wanted to know what this is and where I can get some for putting the new fender on. Also, the fender has the 16Ventiler badge on it, can that be removed with a heat gun?
How long does this job take on average?
note: I had a PPI done on the car, there is no damage from the impact other than the bent fender.

I got some matches for cosmalene, but not many. Maybe I will just take a chunk down to a hardware store and see what I can get in the way of a similar sealant... I have to get this fender on so I can get my damn car in a body shop... that dent is HIDEOUS

I used 3M All-Around Autobody Sealant, p/n 051135 08500, 10oz size on my 83'. I scraped the old joint putty off and ran about a 3/8" bead and bolted the fender on. Then topped the inner fender to door pillar joint off with rubberized undercoat. No problems since. I did clean up a 2x6 area of surface rust.
Slicing through the existing fender's body putty pretty muched sucked.

If you buy another fender and have it shipped to you, make ABSOLUTELY SURE the sender properly reinforces the corners of the fender, esp. the upper rear and front corner, which are extremely prone to damage during shipping. Then, the sender should add bubblewrap or other good padding, and plenty of FRAGILE stickers on the shipping carton.
Good shipping insurance does not help much, since the carrier (FedEx, etc). will just blame the sender for poor packing, sender blames carrier for carelsss handling; you get jerked around for weeks with money out of pocket while the car sits unfixed.
You'd be amazed at how sloppy the packing can be from some sellers of these things, despite eBay rules about proper packing, common sense, etc..
