Oil Thermostat
Does anyone know the temperature at which the 944 turbo oil thermostat should open to circulate oil to the cooler?
Anyone know any way to bench test the oil thermostat?

I guess you could drop the thermostat into a pot of hot water to check.

How do you know when yours is opening? This is an old housing that has probably been sitting around for years (oiled), so I'm just trying to make sure it works before I strap it to my new motor.
Do you have the thermostat removed from the housing ?

Docktor Floyd is correct, 105 C is stamped on the oil t-stat. Oil temps need to be higher than the boiling point of water for it to work properly and boil off contaminants. The plunger actually extends towards the bottom of the housing and raises the sleeve with the windows to allow oil to flow.
Put some peanut oil in your wifes favorite pan, fasten a wire fixture from clothes hanger wire to hold the t-stat suspended in the oil, insert her favorite candy thermometer, place pan on stove and turn up the heat. Watch the t-stat plunger as you near 212 F and higher. Pop some popcorn with the oil and clean up before her return!
Just kidding, get her permission first, or go borrow Michelle's stuff. She would understand.

The old/original thermostats are 105 deg C. But the new oil therms that I have bought in the past 5 years (3 of them), I recall are rated at 95 deg C (or maybe it was 98). Not sure why the change, and I dont recall finding a superceded part number either.
I have checked the lower temp ones in boiling water (since they are rated under 212 deg F) and its very obvious when they open. Keith has a good idea for testing the old 105 deg thermostats, using a veg. oil or equivalent.

You guys were a great help. Thanks to each of you. It works! I put it on the stove in a pot of peanut oil. Here are a few pictures showing the plunger closed and open.
