Default Is it possible to diagnose a bad FPR?

I have had some running issues since I put my car back together after doing bigger turbo, chips, injectors. I removed the ISV and replace the vacum lines. I had been running very rich with bucking and black smoke on boost. I found 2 of the injector harnesses had missing insulation that caused the wires to short. I wrapped them with electrical tape for the time being and the bucking and black smoke is gone and it has great power. I still smell gas and the idle is crappy even after playing with the idle adjustment screw and borrowing another tps. On decereration I get pops out of the tailpipe. For the last three years I have had no start problems when the car is hot. I am wondering about the fpr. Clarks garage says hook up a fuel gauge to the rail. Is that the only way to test?

Well, when i pulled off the vacuum line on the FPR fuel spilled out.

Also, my car would be hard to start when cold and starts fine when warm.

Well, i guess measuring pressure would be next (folowing the manual), other than that, i don't know.

Buying a gauge with an adaptor will be $50 to $60. An FPR is $60. I was hoping to avoid the replace this replace that method. Oh well.

I recommend a test kit ($30 at Autozone) plus whatever the adaptor costs. Before I got one of those I used an oil pressure gauge I got at a swap meet. Mounting a gauge under the hood is not too useful, having a remote kit allows you to see the fuel pressure under load, and can be used on any number of cars.

Hey what about thos hand held vacum thingies that are used to bleed brakes. Can I hook one of those to the fpr and anything else to see if I can pull or hold a vascum?

Hi Alpine,

Yes, you can take the FPR off and connect a metered pressure source (ie one with a gauge) to the input to the FPR (the port that plugs into the fuel rail) and slowly turn up the pressure until the FPR starts to leak the pressure away via the port that connects to the fuel return hose.

You will then see what pressure the FPR is giving.

The small vacuum port should hold vacuum/pressure.

Hope this helps.

Regards

Graham
