ATPTurbo sells a hybrid GT3040R with a smaller 60mm GT30R turbine with 84 trim like J Chen suggested.

According to data, the compresssor of the GT35
can support 600 hp but those figures are base
on using the 1.06 AR hot housing. With the ATP
3040R running on a .63 AR hot housing, I think
it's gonna make max 520 hp. That's the horrible
part about turbo vendors. Always quoting unrealistic
figures.

Guys, I'm so glad you are having this thread. It shows what is involved, and how expensive it gets to experiment, in order to come up with a good turbo. Nice thread!

I don't think you can get the 1.06ar with with KKK Hotside. Well from ATP at least.

Whatever the case Wes, .82AR is already too big
for 2.5L application.

Hey Fast,
You you should become a turbo vendor instead.
Our community is too small for you to make it
into a fruitful business. Yes, theres always the
Thinker & Tinkerers. Thinkers will dream up of putting
this or changing that without actually feeling the
pain that goes into making those changes.
For Tinkerers by nature always try to make different
changes but along the way theres so much fowl languages
& temper throwing & you wonder what the F*****k did
you get yourself into. But at the end of the day when the
thing works, you'll be grinning all the way. Now whether
it's worth the effort or not will depend on the individual

Great point Chen! I think John should expand too, he has a lot of knowledge...

I have decided to go for the GT35R... but it will be a LONG process, intake pipes, intake manifold (as I am using the TO4S cover, plus change the flanges on the exhaust. All good fun, but I will knock it off in steps that I can do that will bring me closer to finishing the project but I wont be able to do it all in one sitting, first step, make a 4" CF intake pipe for the turbo

Just so you know – the GT35R is way too big for a 2.5 and, according to the numbers, only just usable for the 3.1 16v I am going to use it on.

You can size the turbo (compressor) for your application by going to this link on the Garrett web: Turbo sizing

You will need to do some calculations, (simple arithmetic). The bottom line is to not operate the turbo beyond the surge line, and as efficient as possible, (less temperature rise, inner islands on the map).

I was actually wondering about that myself, and was temped to run the numbers and plot the graphs, thanks for making my life easy.

For people seeking information about the calculations and such Corky Bells book Maximum Boost is excellent.

A gt35r will work very well on a 2.5. I am running the same compressor right now.

Yes it works well but not with the stock
turbine. Another way is around is to go
for a small hot housing, something like
.48AR but notsure how it would perform.
I have seen this style of turbo made by
KKK for Blitz. The hot housing is smaller
than the #6 but with huge turbine from
a K27.
