Default Why replacing ALL your 20 year old water lines in important (PART 2)

well, i was on my way home from special tools house... i was going around slight corners nothing crazy yet my rear end was kicking out like cake. I come up to a stop light and all of a sudden smoke starts to POOR out of my hood. Last time this happened o say 2 months ago my head gasket blew. I look down my water temp is going up and was almost at the 2nd bar. I pull over and turn the car off, pop the hood. Im lookin around and notice water on the back side of my motor (i.e. the intake manifold, the hood, firewall) I get out the flash light start to look around and i notice this small 90* hose coming off the head down to the heater valve. Well ill let the picture tell you the rest of the story. All i can say is about 5 minutes into repairing/ replacing the hose, a complete DOWN POOR of rain started to fall on me. What a happy day

Same thing just happened to my car except it was on the track when it happened. Now the big problem is it wasn't twenty years old, maybe two at the most. The failure looks almost identical to yours.

humm

it could have to do with the heater valve. It could be stuck close ?

My car doesn't give heat off very good inside...

i just replaced the radiator hose that goes from the drivers side top of the radiator to that metal pipe. Had a leak.
You guys have any feelings on running straight water with RL water wetter? or maybe a tad of anti freeze. I'm not worried about it on the street, but for track, will the afterboil be too much?

Many [most?] race sanctioning bodies will not allow antifreeze. All racers in NASA run distilled water and Redline Water Wetter. It has considerably better cooling characteristics than antifreeze, but not nearly as much corrosion protection. I change back to antifreeze after the season, of course.

I run 70% AF and 30% water, the very limit of it, given that we sometimes hit -45 to -50*C in the winter. The local race tracks have no issues with antifreeze, they understand nobody really wants to change their coolant twice a year just to race

The PO replaced ALL the water hoses in the car just a couple of months before i purchased it. Honestly, this should be carrid out by everyone, and should be considered a "service" item....just like the belts, rollers and front seals.

I wasn't thinking about corrosion... maybe I'll ad 10% coolent for that, and to limit a bit of afterboil.
I also just replaced the turbo water pump with the updated version.

Antifreeze eats the material...

I've just in the process of changing the belt on my car and was horified at the amount of damaged coolant hoses on the car.

The worst one appeared to be the pipe large coolant pipe that runs from the water pump down toward the bottom of the radiator.

I'm replacing them all with silicon SAMCO items - Perform better and look good and the same time

Running distilled water is VERY important. I'm helping a buddy replace a head because the electrolisis of tap water ate the aluminum at the fire ring.
