Couldn't you just use any dowel / stick / whatever, mark the depth with a pencil and just measure it with a ruler? A bit cheaper, too.

I used to use them in the trucking industry. It was important to monitor tire wear by each 1/32". I've got a dozen of 'em laying around the garage.
