Question Tire size advice needed...

I have an '88 Turbo with Turbo "S" forged wheels. they're 9" on the rear.

I have a puncture in one of the existing tires - 245/45 16 BF Goodrich Comp/TAs which are now out of production. The tire dealer I'm talking to has 225/50 R16 Bridgestone Potenza RE750s, Will they be OK?

I do not do any competitive driving.

Seems a bit narrow and tall for your car. I would try to stay with your 245-45 size, what do you have on the front?

There are plenty of popular tire brands/types available in 245/45. Its as common or more so than a 225/50, and probably only a couple bucks more expensive. So I would shop around for a 245/45.

You could put 225/50s on there, which is the approximate sidewall height (45% of 245 = 110.3, 50% of 225 = 112.5), but it will look a little stretched to fit on a 9" width wheel. And will make the wheel rim more prone/vulnerable to curb rash...

What a coincidence -- I'm tire shopping for my 951S today as well b/c I corded my Comp/TAs in the front!

Anyways, 225/50/16 is more appropriate for the front 7" rims than for the rear 9" rims. I'm not sure if that would even fit in the back. I run 245/45/16 in the rear.

www.tires.com or www.tirerack.com

They have plenty of nice tires in 245/45R16 and matching 225/50R16 for the front. I'm not even sure you'll be able to get 225s to fit on a 9" rim, it's probably way to narrow for the rim width. Just FYI, most tire manufacturer's spec 8" as the widest rim for a 225, and 9" as the widest for a 245.

If you aren't interested in tracking the car, I'd recommend the Fuzion ZRi tires from Tirerack. They are made by Bridgestone/Firestone and are really great street tires. I just put a set on our Firehawk, and they are WAY better than the BFG KDWs that we had on it.

Don't get the 245/50, get 245/45. Otherwise it mayl screw up your ABS.

IIRC, 245/45/16 is the correct size in the rear. The 50's will have to tall of a sidewall.

245 is kinda small for a 9" rim, i have 255/40's on the rear of my car.(8.5" rim)

also, 205(f)/245(r) is a odd combo, understeer or something. (Matt H posted about it a while back). The suggested combo is 225(f)/245(r)

245/45R16 is right and it is made in the RE750 and the Fuzion ZRi

I'm going through the same debate right now and I was thinking the same thing. I also have 16x7" fronts and 16x9" rears for my 951S and I'm trying to decide how wide to go in the rear. I've been searching for about an hour and I can't figure out what to do. Any ideas? This will be for weekend street/occasional DE car.

In 16" tire sizes, you should go with the 245/45s. When you get into the 255 sizes, they are usually a 50 series, which is too tall of a sidewall and throws off your gearing, speedometer, etc.

7x16: 205/55 or 225/50
8x16: 225/50 or 245/45
9x16: 245/45

Thats about it for choices, and all will work on a 944.

Well i see where your going with this oddjob. You can't get a 255/40/16 tire, 255/40/17 yes. Which is kinda ****ty, but on a 16" rim the biggest tire you can get is a 245 like oddjob said. Unless we are talking comp tires, then yes you can get 275/45/16's which will fit on a 9" wide rim.

Well unless you have 17" rims you can't go bigger than 245's.

Yea.... I just found that out the hard way by shopping around-- so I'm going with 245/45/16's, which is the widest ones being made.
