Has anyone got dyno proof of the gains going to a full 3" exhaust?

You guys are impossible! Why not spend ~$700 for a Lindsey exhaust and find out how much of a gain. That's a small price to pay for another 20-30hp.

1. Because I dont want a mild steel exhaust that is prone to rusting
2. Its a long way to ship an exhaust back that has many reports about fitment issues
3. Shipping expense is too great, I can make one cheaper here
4. $700 plus shipping and tax is a lot to pay to "find out" if there are any gains. Hence this thread about people who have already done it

$700 is way way way too much imho for exhaust..

I am thinking that I will go with the following
$70 for a magnaflow
$40 for a nice tip
$100 woth of mild steal and bends

$100-150 in labor at an exhaust shop

so for well under $400 in some cases you can have a 3" catback made for you..

dunno.. I am used to camaro prices so these $700-1000 exhausts jsut sound nuts to me..

ohh and sorry this is a little off topic..

Hey NZ,
May I suggest that you make your exhaust out of aluminium.
I was sceptical myself but after seeing my friend ran his
custom set for over a year I'm sold on it. Only set back is
it sounds louder. I think it's something to do with resonance
of the aluminium tubing.

Interesting, I was going to use SS and ceramic coat it and DEI wrap it. Ally would heat up quicker and be lighter I guess, do you have any reference for the benefits somewhere?

As far as weight benefits, there almost aren't any. I've seen people say there is 20-30lbs to shave off by going with an SS exhaust. I weighed my SFR downpipe/high flow cat and stock downpipe/cat at only a ~1-2lb difference. The stock muffler is extremely heavy though. Overall, I'd say you could maybe shave 5 lbs in weight off with an entire exhaust, or a little more adding a test pipe to that.

I could be wrong, but why are we talking about backpressure in a turbo exhaust? From what I understood, the turbo itself provides all the needed backpressure to the engine and from the outlet of the turbo, you want as little resistance as possible for max power. Therefore going from a 2.5" to 3" or even 4" exhaust would benefit if there is less resistance then the stock 2.5" setup. Now, if there is very little overall resistance in the stock setup, then of course you won't see much gain by upgrading to a 3" exhaust or even removing the exhaust entirely. But I can't see how the stock exhaust is that efficient -- espescially when adding horsepower with bigger turbos and whatnot to the stock system.. if you have added a bigger turbo then you have to realize a bigger exhaust will give you more power.

The gains seem to have the same caracter as a 928 I dynoed last week with a 3.5" and sport cats setup. More power that follows the same curve as the stock up to the mid/high range where the gains get considerable.

Is it really stainless? To me it seems like its definitely not plain steel, as my stock exhaust has absolutely no rust on it. I was thinking it was aluminized steel or something.
