Jack rear from transaxle?

Having just finished redoing entire drivetrain and suspension in my car and havaing all these pieces out on the ground, I can tell youit is "probably" ok to use the transaxle as a jacing point. But Jdietz is right, only two small bolts hold the transmission in place and IMHO this is not a good idea. My preferred method is to use two floor jacks with a 4" block of 2x4 placed between the jack and the spot where the rear trailing arm connects to the unibody right behind the jacking point in front of the back tire. Jaking both sides evenly is very safe and allows you to put the stands at the rear jack points so they are out of the way when working in that area thus not interfearing with the creeper(or in my case, the creep on the creeper!)

Common sense tells me no, but the many who have done it for years with no reports of damage tells me maybe so. Often engineers say it can't be done, when in the real world it is done all the time. I guess the question is whether or not there is a definite plus to the "risky" technique that outweighs the risk. Time savings? No, I have plenty of time. Less dangerous? Heck no, danger is my middle name (actually, John is my middle name, but that's another story). Curiosity? Yes, that may be enough to get me to try it.

You'd be surprised how much load 2 little bolts can hold. ![Smilie](https://rennlist.com/forums/images/smilies/smile.gif)

I've done it, use a block of wood...no problems.

Haha, yes, I have jacked up countless Porsches at the rear center, whether it be a 944 or an air-cooled 911 or 996/997, just have to be careful to use a block of wood or a hockey puck or similar, and pick the right spot for jacking. Yes, engine/trans mounts are a factor, but if the engine/trans lifts an excessive amount before the body lifts, they need to be replaced!
I suppose this is also a convenient time to reiterate that filling the voids of the later 944/968 trans mount with 3M window-weld urethane or similar is one of the single best modifications to these cars . . . .
