Default Neon RT

Young guy stopped to look at my wife Prelude SI we were selling and his buddy was driving a Neon RT the Turbo car. He was bragging it up and then I mentioned my 951. He was sure his Neon would smoke it and said he would be on the look out for me when I had it out. I am curious as to how these car's match up against the 951 anybody know?

If you are stock, you better not give him the "go", or you are dismissed.

"Acceleration figures (bone stock): 2003 modelsCar and Driver: 0-60 in 5.6 seconds, top speed 153 mph

Sport Compact Car: 0-60 in 5.8 seconds, quarter mile 14.2 seconds.

Brooke McClelland wrote: According to their chassis dyno, this Neon puts out 223 HP and 250 lb-ft of torque at the wheels! ... In comparison, their test of a 2002 Nissan Sentra SE-R, which is rated at 175 HP, put out just 141 HP at the wheels.

Apex Technology has dynoed the SRT-4 and found 248 hp - at the wheels!

The 2.4 liter engine (also used in the PT Cruiser, without a turbo, and in the PT Cruiser GT, with a turbo) produces 215 horsepower and 245 lb-ft of torque - both at reasonable engine speeds, not wound up past 6,000 rpm. A new, lower-price version of that engine will put out 180 horsepower and be available in 2004. "

I think '15' is the number of miles you get before something falls off. It is a Dodge product.

That said it's not a bad car for $20,000. Add the fact you can buy FACTORY produced staged upgrades all while KEEPING YOUR WARRANTY INTACT, and that's really not a bad car at all.

But, again, it is a Dodge...

BTW it's a "SRT-4" not "RT"

I considered getting one as my daily driver but got the WRX instead. The SRT-4 is no doubt quick and will smoke my WRX but it's wrong-wheel drive and the build quality isn't too good.

The engine is built in the Saltillo engine plant and has one of the best build ratings in Chrysler engine plants.

The bores are extremely close together which allows for zero over boring, the passages between bores are very small similar to the old "Quad four" from GM. They are better than the old cross drilled 2.2L previously from Chrysler. Which blew head gaskets and warped heads every few miles.

The chassis well that is a different story.

I played with a heavily modified one. I KILLED him by aboout 5 car lengths on the launch, and then he caught me, and around 100 I started to pull away from him again. By 150ish, he was again 5-6 car lengths back. These cars are a joke from a launch. Most of the time the punk kids driving them will not race you from a launch. These things are SICK from 20-80, but that is about it.

Yeah they do sound nice. Dual resonators and no mufflers, never thought I'd see that in a production car.

That is the deal breaker right there. At the end of the day, you are still going home in a neon. Maybe if they would have put that engine in a totally new (RWD) platform, even I would have picked one up. Come on, that kind of performance for under $20k?! I just can not see myself showing up for a meeting or date in a neon. No way.
