Interesting. Prices arn't to bad.. most of it is prob just to pay for the machines. I could imput my headlight design into that.... hmm

I tried using that place before to make a 1/2" ss laser cut twinscroll flange. The cost was over $400 easily for a quantity of one, can you say ridiculous? It's not feasible at all, and really directed at high volume quantities above 1,000 pieces.

Sometimes you can find laser-cutting CAM machinery on Ebay for cheap. My old university had one sitting in the basement until some of us got motivated and actually tried to chase down drivers for it. Made really cool foam / plywood models and even some light metal stuff. IIRC it had just been sitting around forgotten about - sometimes stuff like it turns up.

I find this funny. Most people here will be thinking. " I can have this part I designed made." But unless you're planning on having a small run of parts (50-200) the cost will be very very high. This is because there are not enough parts to dilute the up front cost of making a new part (machine setup, programming [you really think they are just going to translate your CAD file to their expensive machine, without reviewing it?] quoting, design review [is the part makable?]. You have to remember that just about any order in the 1-20 range would be considered a prototype order. Most companies will pay stupid amounts of money to have one prototype part made. Because if you bypassed that step and ordered production quantities of a part that didn't fit, it could cost hundreds of thousands of dollars. And that is the machine time you are competing for.

Actually, I have personally used this company's software, and will probably be placing an order. 300 dollars for a one off V-belt pulley for my 928 since I need to press on an EDIS trigger wheel. Sounds pretty damn well-priced and easy to me. Seeing as how pulley from the "tuners" when you want to SC something are like 400-600 dollars. And they make 20 of them. If I made 20 of my design it would 150 dollars each.

I don't think anyone is under the delusion that it's a cheaper way of doing things. It may be if you are making a lot, but if you make only one it will be expensive anywhere you take it. The advantage of eMachineShop is that you can design and mill the product and even have ot delivered to your door, without leaving your house. If you know what you are doing, or are making a part that doesn't need to be "perfect" you can get a run made and delivered with relative ease. You don't have to waste time going from shop to shop to find one that will suit your needs. These guys do almost everything.

Say for example, you live in a farm hours away from the city and any machine shop, and come up with a design for a new odo gear that will never break. You can have these guys make a run of 1000, and you can sell them and turn a profit, without ever leaving your house.
