Default Stripped Transmission Plug

Well... I was going to do a regular Transmission Oil change on my recently purschased 87 Turbo. The drain plug came loose pretty easy, but the fill plug seems to be slightly rounded out and isnt moving a inch. I've tried for two days to get this stupid plug out with no success. HELP!

Usually the plug sticks out about 1/8" to 1/4" or so and you can grab it with some channel locks or vice grips and back it out that way.

If that doesn't work, try to gently force (oxymoron I know) a 18mm allen wrench into there and see if you can get that to work. If the 17mm hole is messed up enough, that may work.

Good luck.

Ill try your suggestion with the vicegrips. I dont have a 18mm allem wrench (not exactly a common size) so hopefully the vicegrips work.

Make sure you use a good 17 mm allen socket and tap it in with a hammer to "wake up" the plug. If it still wants to strip try a 18 mm or next size up american. Also may try using a propane torch and heating the tranny housing around the plug.....go easy on the heat though.

11/16" allen socket = 17.5 mm. Might be worth a try.

I bought a new batch of JB Weld (the original kind, not the quick set stuff) and glued the alan socket in place after cleaning the metal completely. The next day, I cranked it right out.

Although I'm sure you've thought of it already....but be sure to clean the hole out first. I know on mine I pulled quite a bit of junk out of the hole giving me about another 1cm of depth.

Also, just soak it really good with PB Blaster or your favorite penetrating oil tonight & worry about it tomarrow.

Lesson #1, always remove fill plug first.

Lesson #2, weld in the proper size allen and never screw with it again.

I blasted the hell out of it with PB Blaster for the time being. I'll wait till my new plugs come in the mail before I go back and remove the old ones.

Also, you may try hitting the edge of it with a hammer and chisel and see if you can work it out that way.
