Default mpg of 400hp?

With the price of gas I was curious what was the mpg of your 400hp engines if kept out of boost range?

I'd imagine just because you CAN make 400 h.p. doesn't mean you need to all the time. Heck, my 944 gets 28+ mpg if I drive it like an old lady - it's just a four-banger after all! Even a 400 h.p. motor should make well over 22 (I'm guessing) if driven very conservatively. Of course getting on the loud pedal will cause that number to plummet quickly.

I can still get 17-20mpg around town and see 30mpg on the highway as long as I drive light footed. If I am always on it, 8-10mpg is about normal.

$2.50/gallon here in florida. As least that is what it was last night. It is more expensive here in Gainesville because of the taxes (there is no other income except for purchases from students).

If you've got a MAF/MAP setup, test pipe, big turbo and lots of boost, it's already pretty close to 400hp (crank). I can't see any of those significantly lowering the MPG if the car is driven conservatively. Of course when you're using all of the power, it gets worse - which is pretty logical, given that the power comes from burning gasoline.

I'm nowhere near that HP level, and I'm getting about 15 MPG driving around the town. Then again, I didn't get the car to save fuel... and of course, at the track I get around 8-10 MPG

The beauty of a turbo is that all (or almost all) of your modifications aren't active while driving with cruise control; they only show up under heavy throttle. For this reason modified turbo cars typically see the same gas mileage as stock.

I was nearing 500hp in my previous car and still saw 28-30mpg on the freeway if I behaved.

How bad was it with my foot to the floor? Well, some quick math says that I burned about 3/4 of a gallon of gas for every 60 seconds of wide open throttle. What is that in mpg? Pshh, it ain't good but damn was it fun. That's all I know.

Quick Reply: mpg of 400hp?
