Anyone have any experience racing WRX?
I'm wondering how easy to mod are the WRXs...I know they're about 300hp from the factory...Are they easy to make big HP numbers like Supras? And our cars? What's the deal?

the regular wrx is something like 220 hp stock and runs mid 14s in the quarter mile and has a glass tranny
the sti has 300hp, 6 spd, adjustable torque from front and rear and runs 13.2s in the quarter mile. this is your better bet
but the evo outperforms the wrxs at the track(except quartermile runs around 13.5s) but you run a boost controller and you are in the low-low 13s and high 12s very easily, it also has easier tuning than a wrx

400-500 hp is not out of the question. The setup is what counts, being all wheel drive, you can make good use of rapid spooling turbos and 2005 electronics. I had a roommate that left the motor stock and worked on suspension and brakes. It was very impressive.
Around the ATL I know there are several high HP WRX's, a number of them would eat me for lunch.

Greetings. I just purchased a '89 944T this week and currently own a '03 WRX as my daily driver. There are tons of aftermarket parts available for the WRX but getting the car past the 400 hp mark requires a lot. The Evo responds much better to mods and IMO is easier to work. The flat 4 of the WRX and STi means that any type of head work requires pulling the motor, two sets of head gaskets and 4 cams (2 each side). Same w/ the fuel system, 2 rails.
After doing a few mods to my WRX I decided to back out of it, return it to stock and get a project car. Hence the 951. I was actually looking for another MR-2 Turbo (I've owned 2 before I got married) and stumbled upon a Porsche for less money ($8k for a 80,000 mile '89 944T).

With a couple of upgrades to the wrx and it can put out more power than the STI. My friends brother took a 2002 wrx and it easy out performs a STI now. Didn't go money crazy either .
I recommend the EVO 8 over the wrx though even if it doesn't look as flashy

Topgear loves the Evo 8 over the Sti a ton! Personally, I like the more subtle looks of the Evo as well... There was an STI at last weekend's mountain drive... that guy kept up fairly easily with the M3 and 911 TT's I think... especially through the twisties.

wrx's getting into the 400whp range is very hard. I have several friends with non STI's and STI's. Their tranny's cant take much abuse. but, I love love love the STI's. If I had to buy one i think I would go evo8 because they can make more power reliabily. Although mechanic LSD"s...ewww
The looks of the STI aren't matched INHO. God I love the way those cars look on 18's.

Back when I had my 86' 951 I raced a WRX from a roll and beat it no problem. I don't remember what he had done to it but not a whole lot. I also have a video on my computer of a race between a WRX, a 944 Turbo, and a Prelude and I hate to watch it because the 944 gets stomped from the dig.

What's the weight of the WRX, STI and EVO? Any idea on the gearing?
HP/TQ are just a part of the equation...

I had a 2002 wrx with a stage 2 kit from Turbo XS and a little more. Great car, as a daily driver, but needed alot more attention for the track. Needed better brakes (STI is fine with the Brembo's) and suspension) As for the power, I was putting down about 275rwhp or 340hp (huge drive train loss...but tons of grip). The TurboXS kit certainly took this car to the right level, and there was still alot more room for improvement, such as a front mount intercooler and ECU reflash. You can easily get 400hp out of these cars, but they are not light (3300lbs) and 4WD.
You will have alot more fun tracking a 951, but if you enjoy driving as a daily driver, you will be more confortable in the WRX.
Gas milage is an issue with the modded WRX or STI. Don't expect more then 15 M/gal.

My friends are big into the EVO/STi scene.. Two of my friends have EVOs on the stock turbo, but basically every other bolt on, running 11.80s in the quarter mile, somewhere around 380WHP? IIRC... Race gas, cams, AEM EMS, lots of boost, etc. Then I visited my friends shop the last week as he was doing a turbo upgrade on an EVO getting it ready for a dyno day... With the new turbo it put 440AWHP to the ground...
