There are a few options I can think of off the top of my head, all of which are a bit involved and require some new form of crank trigger.
60-1 crank trigger route:
There's converting to a 60-1 using a Clewett Engineering Kit for $500+ (which has been discontinued, by the way) or a Chris White kit for about half the price. Then join the 60-1 experimental code group and find out where that project is at (I haven't been keeping up in a while and there's only 330 posts right now .)
60-1 flywheel route:
Install a 968 flywheel and an appropriate sensor. Then join the 60-1 experimental code group...
Ford sensor route:
Modify your crank pulley to include a Ford 36-1 trigger, install all of the related Ford components (VR sensor, EDIS module, coil pack, and custom modified spark plug wires), and use the Ford crank trigger code. Cost of a few hundred bucks plus a set of 944 plug wires.
Chevy route:
Swap a small block Chevy 350 V8 and use all of the attached sensors. This is the only 944 MegaSquirt success story I've ever seen.

Wow sounds like a pain but the last suggestion
sound less painful. What about splicing into the
wiring loom ? Do you still have to keep the DME
& KLR ? How does LINK or TEC go about in doing away
with both the DME & KLR ?

I would do the forum thing, but I am very busy just keeping the site I have together and updating it as much as I can.
But if someone wants to make a forum I would be all for it.
In the meantime discussing things here and having people email me ideas directly is working nicely.
I just found out how to change the rpm axis values in the part throttle maps, check it out. Next is the load values including what the %s mean, then changing number of boxes available.

There's a guy in town that created a box that converts the incompatible signal to a SDS/megasquirt/etc compatible signal . It's running on my friend's Eagle Talon and SDS. Sells for about $100us.

Link does one nice thing the other two don't: it can use the stock sensors which makes life so much easier.

What other tooth configurations will Megasquirt recognize?
Here's a couple of pics of my new trigger wheel setup I've made for my AEM EMS. This trigger wheel fits behind the timing belt cover and is very clean looking. I'm in the process of making an adjustable sensor mounting bracket that will be anchored to the oil pan much like the Clewett design.
Will Megasquirt recognize mag and/or hall effect sensors? PnP or NpN sensors?
If this will work for others planning on going standalone, send me a PM.

Ahh, the 8051 is harvard architecture? Or the maps are just written right into the code?
I'm getting into programming PIC microcontrollers, since the 8051's and related equipment were more expensive, and a bit harder to work with.

Yes, you can use crank magnets and a hall sensor. But it will only work for a fuel signal on a 4 banger. So it might not be a bad way to run a fuel only setup on a 951.
To add spark timing capability, there are a couple of options. Some of it depends on which spark system you're going to use. I've really only looked at the EDIS stuff, as that seems to have the most support. The easiest option is just getting the actual Ford EDIS 36-1 wheel and sensor to fit on the front of the crank. I've also seen guys grind down the AC pulley to make a 36-1 wheel. Check out the MS forums for more ideas...
