Default 400whp breaks things......

I think I sheared the bolts off... CV disconnected from the tranny . Just when the weather was getting good and I can turn the boost back up...

Jeez.
That's pretty amazing. Want to take me for a spin in your 951?

I've heard some great things about it.

Definately time to go to some 10.9 grade CV bolts.

10.9 is the metric grade 8, are the stock bolts 8.8 (grade 5?)

Did you have wheel hop during a burnout? I've bent some CV bolts before, but that was just because they started to back out. I'm not anywhere near 400rwhp.

FWIW, Windward states on their site that the tranny cannot handle more than 350 HP.

"TECH TIP: Your 944 turbo's transaxle (Manufactured by Audi) cannot tolerate over 350 H.P. (real world) without breaking. Oddly enough, all 924 models have a stronger Porsche-manufactured transaxle."

Rage:

I am very curious. Check out these aftermarket GKN axles. Do you think they could handle 400+ RWHP? If you don't think these can, what will work? I need to know myself?

Axle bolts are commonly 12.9 with black oxide coating. If you were using anything less, upgrade.

I'm using the GKN axels. I used to break the stock CV's pretty much every 2 or 3 months at around 350whp, never had a problem after the upgrade.

Not true. I've been running well over 400whp on the stock tranny/LSD forever. I have broken 1st and 2nd gear before, but that has nothing to do with power, just drag racing abuse on the tranny with nothing but a set of autothority chips.

BTW - noticed you have a C32 in your sig. Nice car! I have a SLK 32 with all the renntech goodies and some other trick mods hehe.

Nope. It was a straight road, just floored it in 2nd, and bam. I've had issues with the CV bolts before, they would work it's way loose from vibrations, so they were safety wired to make sure they dont slip out. Last week I did notice a weird vibration and light clunking from the driver side CV, so I knew something was up. Quick inspection showed nothing. Didn't think the bolts were so broken already hehe.

I've snapped a couple on my NA, but they backed out first.
From all the grease spray, I'm inclined to say they backed out before snapping.
Do you use locktite on them? Since mine backed out once, I've always used blue locktite, and they've never backed out.

I live in Signal Hill, but my G/F lives in Forest lawn, and I go to the university, so no part of the city is foreign to me

I saw your car at race city last year, but you had your winter tires on

Ryan (redlyne_mr2) has said many many good things about your car...

Yea, the bolts used to back out even with locktite, and shear the bolts because only 2 or 3 are holding up all the power. That's why they're safety wired now so they don't come out. Every single bolt broke this time around hehe.

I heard it's going to snow at the end of the week, so if you wanna check it out, lemme know while it's still warm. Hopefully the car will be back on the road by tomorrow.

So is the weak link the CV joint, the bolts or the axle itself??

Rage, this happen during a hard launch?
