Ok, had a go at acrylic... not perfect yet, but will get there. I have ordered some K&N prefilter gauze and will line the bottom of the box with it to stop dust and water etc that the air duct may allow in... will post pics when it arrives.

About the intake you created under the filter, since you recorded cooler air, why not lower the filter and plumbing to go into the fender itself (like those Civic/Integra intakes), follow me?

Now get you a couple of those temperature stickers and mount one in the box and one on top and take a look at what is going on.
Or the fun way. Run two temp probes and do it electronically.
Go buy you one of those "Tornado" inserts and put it in your cool air induction line ;P

A big pre-filter like that (being a large surface area), still allows plenty of flow, so has very little practical loss in breathing efficiency. And, with a funnel feeding the intake hose from the higher-pressure aerodynamic stagnation point at the nose of the car, the modest ram-air pressure effect would pretty much offset any loss in flow due to filtration restrictions.
In effect, that's largely what the BMW 535i does: Feeds cooler denser ambient air under modest ram-air pressure from in front of the grill into a sorta oversized air filter, to offset flow efficiency lost to bends, restrictions, turbulence, etc..

This should take care of any loss in flow from the foam filter.
It does offer a slight restriction in air flow itself, but that "in theory" would be offset by it's vortex like fun
