Default to retard or not to boost?

I was tinkering around with the FQS and was wondering wich would be more beneficial to run on stock "0" fqs...well actually I am running on 3 since I needed more fuel but 3 has no timing retard..or to run it on fqs 7 wich has more fuel and timing retard...
I am using vitesse chips wich like most high peformance chips like 93 octane more than the 91 we get here in CA..and he did say I can run either or....
I can run 15 on no retard fqs 3 or 17 to 18 on retard fqs7...I have seen it sayed here than retardation and more boost wins over advaced timing any day...so I am here to get your good people's oppinion and would love if anyone actually comapared the two...no matter what kind of setup ...just getting a general idea
I have Vitesse T04E, MAF,Bosch 52,Tial 38,smt5 and will be using aquamist water injection with 30 % methanol mostly to prevent detonation.
Thank you

Seriously, I haven't lived in Cali in about 17 years, but is it feasable to run an octane boost product, thus removing the problem? I'm running the Torco racing additive for unleaded fuel systems, and it is a big difference in power and quality. Just a thought.

Danno had an excellent write-up on his site about octane boosters including various cost / benefits. The "off the shelf" stuff is crap, more often than not. There are a couple of products that are quite good (including the one that "won" the best bang for the buck) but they're difficult to find, IIRC. Check it out. Tolulene is good overall; I'll probably end up running that since it's readily available.

More boost is better but when retarding timing with the fqs you affect the whole rpm band. So off boost engine performance will be affected. Best bet would be to have a chip burned that will not affect off boost performance by only retarding more when on boost. There is also a fine line as to how much you can retard before egt's are affected. If you intend to drive road races than egt's will soar. If your intent will be occasional bursts than you may be able to get away with more retard.

Thats what I did, I pulled back timing just a bit at peak boost for those times when I run 18 psi.

Sorry for the hijack, Porsche-O-phile,

where to you get Tolulene? Is it commonly available through an auto parts supplier, or somewhere special? TIA

I think both paint and hardware stores carry it.

If you retard, you should watch your EGT's . Not sure how far those chips retard the timing under high boost and WOT. Better safe than sorry.

one thing I did notice that when retarding I get lower 8 idle were as in normal timing its in the high 8 crossing to 9 more often than not.
I am a bit worried about the egt's plus runing aquamist might help cool the boost so maybe I'll just run fqs 3.....+ fuel..no retard.

Darius, just go with the settings as I told you!! I'm the only one who knows what's on the chips you have.. Stay at 15psi on pump gas till you install water injection. Why is it that you guys never want to listen and no one wants to play it safe????
