Hmmm, well this is a little depressing. On parts alone I've spent and average of about $600 (yes, six hundred) a month for the past 3 years! I bought a chassis without an engine, so this includes the expense of buying an entire engine. Also, this is to bring the car to it's final performance level in terms of the engine, simply because there is not any room improvement. (just trying to justify this project to myself there)

well I have an S2 that I have owned since October of 2004 and I have put 7,000 miles on and have spent roughly 1800 dollars on it inmanitence, of course some of it was for the new 18" wheels and tires too

I think I'm at about the 9k + mark but I am afraid to total it up. That is within the first year of owning the car also. Some is performance, but most isn't. I still need some paint, and clutch, and rod bearings, and

I look at it like this. Most of our 951's are high mileage cars, which means they're usually tired and in need of some sort of work, unless you buy the absolute best maintained one you can find.
I've been relatively happy with mine, and surprised that it hasn't been more trouble. I bough mine for $7.5k at 159k miles. I've put 30k miles on it in ~6 months so it's at 189k. In 30k I've spent about $3k on maintenance and replacing brakes/suspension/oil/etc. $3k includes all of the upgrades as well (ebc, billet bv, suspension, etc). So I'm out ~$10.5-11k, but that's still not bad. Of course, I was lucky enough to have receipts and proof that the 60k mile maintenance had just been performed before I bought it, so that saved me a good amount. For being what was once a ~$50k+ Turbo Porsche, I think it's a pretty damn good deal! Still cheap compared to any other Porsche turbo except the 931, yet excellent performance compared to anything in the price range. I'm hoping to purchase a 964 or 993 within the next year, and then I'm sure I'll start to experience lots of expensive maintenance!

The flip side of this is that you can buy a nice 951 that some poor slob (like us) poured money into and you still get it cheap! I paid $9000 for mine in 2002 with 127K miles, with the following new or very recent items: paint job, seats, clutch, water pump, belts, radiator, Momo steering wheel, 17" cup replica wheels, RE730 tires. The PO gave me all the reciepts and I tallied over $8000 in just big ticket items in one year
Once I got the car, the happy bleeding continued. It was cosmetically a creampuff, but the engine was tired so i rebuilt it ($3500 in parts, 5 months on the stands), then the brakes in '03 ($1000), new AC in June '04 ($1000) and the head (8 bent valves, $1500) in Sept '04. Plus misc goodies here and there.
Now I could sell it and get...$9000? I like to hope $12K, but I don't really think so. So the next guy would get a great bargain. But that's not going to happen anyway. It's a fun, expensive but generally healthy hobby. I hear it's cheaper than a mistress.
