Question Installing Amp & Speakers

Would appreciate some feedback.
Is there a need to run new speaker wires, or can I use what currently exists if I am installing an Amp? Would attaching the Amp to the head unit via the RCA's allow me to use my existing wires?

Thanks always?

I think it claims 240 as Max with 4 channels and 2 input. I have not bought a head unit yet, but I was trying to get the Amp and speakers set up and then probably get a blaupunkt or similar unit with two preouts.
Thanks!

This all depends on the connectors on the amp, the power rating of the amp, and the power rating of the speakers.

As someone who has over 30 years of electrical, electronic, digital, CATV, and audio experience, the only thing I can say is, "If you have to ask, then you need professional assiatance."

I say this because there are more ways to screw-up than you can count, all of which lead to wasting your hard earned money, and some of which can cause the loss of your vehicle.

With that said, I HIGHLY RECOMMEND taking the car to a professional car audio system installer..

^what? that's silly.

for the amp:
power wire to the battery, you should have a fuse in the line

ground to the chasis

control/rem wire to the ignition (called diff. things- but tells the amp to turn on when key is turned)

rca cables to headunit
or mp3/cd/tape player with correct adaptor
(I'm not going to get a head unit because: I want my jetta to look like it has no stereo and I will just use my ipod anyway, there is an adapter that goes from a headphone jack to rca cables that works great, $6 found just about anywhere, no fm tuner crap)

you can use the factory wires for your speakers, as I doubt you will need high grade wire for your application

I went to a car stereo store and boght the monster cable kit for amp install. I also replaced the speaker wire with monster car cable I think all of speaker wire was 30..00 canadian and kit was 70 canadian. If your going to take the time to put a better stereo in easier job if ya have the right stuff to begin with. Also bought midgrade rca cables too....all together maybe 120 canadian. the cables are shielded well decrease white noise.

What's a good, small mono amp for the KLA Industries subwoofer that goes in the cubby hole?

Get a 5 channel Alpine, either a MRF-V357 or MRP-320(both are discontinued and can be had really cheap!). These amps are small enough to mount in either cubby in the rear corners of the car. Securing to can be a challenge though. Run the RCA's & speaker wires down one side of the car, the power & remote on down the other side. I put a KLA box in the other cubby. Find some OEM 10 speaker door pannels that match your interior. I installed Boston seperates F&R. Other than the head unit, it looks totally factory.

I did not think that the install would be a problem and had already removed speakers and fabricated the back for 6.5 infinitis. However, adding new speaker wires to the front door looked like a lot of work, therefore my question about reusing the old wires. I have the Amp mounted in the right wheel well on a piece of carpeted mdf.
Appreciate the concern Cliff
Thanks

Biggles:

Hey, no problem.

The only reason I tend to "sound the alarm" on posts like yours is that I have seen way too many cars literally "go up in smoke" because of a high power sound system that was not installed properly.

Chris,
I know that I owe you a six pack of guinness for some help in the past, but the radio is a little too much. Plus I already have a store credit from Fry's that I intend to use towards the purchase.

Put up a price maybe someone else will be interested.
Thanks!

The unit is in pretty good condition... I didn't use it much. I was thinking around $399. I can take pics if anyone is interested.

Thanks,
