Default Harbor Freight Bit me...

I simply can not go into that place without buying something. I went there with my buddy so he could get an engine stand, and I ended up coming home with this:

Correct, it's a small sand blasting unit.

Nice! Two questions: how much was it? (if you don't mind me asking), and how big of a compressor do you need to run it reasonably well?

It was $300. I run a 7 hp 120 gallon compressor. It moves 9 SCFM. I can't really run 100% duty cycle. I can run maybe 85-90% duty cycle and still maintain a constant pressure in the tank.

Hos, here is what you can do with a sandblaster: (don't worry, this isnt going in the engine! )

LOL, Yeah, Just a little bit. That phone dial is bent, and I wanted to strip it down and powder coat it, and weld some decorative legs on it, and get a piece of glass to make it into an end table. The steel belts in the tire apparently do not want me to do anything like that.

That's one of the bigger ones, they have smaller ones for less money and most of the decent sized stores keep them in stock. (The ones here in Phoenix generally do anyway.) The one a friend of mine picked up that's a little smaller and can be used bench top was around $100 or $150 if I remember correctly.

The biggest issue I had using it was that the feed tube is goofy sometimes and you have to take it off, bang it out and put it back on. Not a big deal but somewhat annoying.

Secondly if you get one, you need to have a good shop vac, a good compressor, and a good filter for the intake of the shop vac. (no filter before it even goes into the vacuum means you go through blasting media pretty quick as well as potentially hosing up your vacuum). If you don't have a shop vac all the media you've been blasting with turns to dust in the cabinet and you can't see what you're doing until you let it settle. Doesn't take much either so without a shop vac it's pretty much useless.

Another bit of advice, get some plastic film "tear-offs" for the inside of the window or it'll get pitted to hell very soon.

Don't buy the extended warranty from Harbor Freight. I picked up a CHEAP (notice how I capped that) 10" compound mitter saw to do 1 job over a three week period - cut rafters for a house I was building. I figured if it made it through that I would be fine with it. Saw ran $100 and I thought for an extra $20 I can get a long term warranty - seemed like a great deal. I didn't get around to starting the roof for about 6 months, so any DOA return oppertunity had passed when we finally began the project. Well, the saw made it one day and literally came apart. So I took a look at the warranty and discoved that I have to send the unit in to be repaired and the service facility was across country. With the weight of the unit it would have cost far more than the purchase price to return it for service. I would up giving it away at a garage sale. Now I like Harbour Freight and will likely buy there again, but stick to the name brand power tools and READ the fine print on the warranty.

I buy quite a few things from HF but never anything electrical. I just bought 4 wheel dollies to roll my projects around the garage. Here's just 1 of 3 fine pieces of hardware that came with with the set
