Default What kind of Race cluster/ gauges to get?

I am going to install a race cluster or gauges into an aftermarket dash, or stock dash, isnt decided yet. This will be in a track car. I was wondering where some of you guys that have these clusters got them from and what kind they are? What options do I have? How is the wiring to the stock harness? Pics? I am thinking kinda like the one dmoffit had on his silver widebody beast....Thanks a lot for the info!

How much are you willing to spend on gauges?

SPA gauges (dual digital gauges) run up to $230 (or so)

I placed an order for a boost gauge (old one costed me <$20, i doubt it would be reliable) and an oil temperature gauge. Both Autometer Ultra Lite series (if that helps).

These cost roughly $50-$70 depending where you get them from. Ebay also has some very attractive LED gauges if you are into lights, but being a track car, i doubt that you would be interested in these.

Here is where you could get a "kit" from (3 gauges for ~$120)

www.egauges.com

Hope this helps.......

Try here: http://www.racerpartswholesale.com/

I recently got one of their catalogs and if you want to spend the cash you can get an F1 style steering wheel with all of the bells and whistles.

You might try a Stack setup if you are looking for a custom dash. This is what dmoffit has. Motec is another option if you are going crazy.

If you are sticking with a stock dash, SPA is a good choice although pricey. You might want to pose this question on the racing forum as more guys over there have this type of thing.

For a boost gauge I swear by VDO I have heard others having problems with the autometer unit.
I have the autometer air fuel and have not connected it yet, but have heard it is a good unit.

SPA gauges for temperatures (coolant, oil, air), voltages, or semi-static pressures (oil, fuel) are a perfect choice. I can't say enough about them.

Having owned several SPA gauges let me mention that seeing a sweeping boost gauge priceless and it's hard to watch a digital boost gauge. Too much is change too fast, hence I recommend AGAINST a SPA boost gauge. I love my VDO 30-0-25 boost gauge.

Note that SPA makes a lot more than just digital gauges. They offer several instrument cluster options you may be interested in.

My autometer boost gauge works well, but I do prefer the look of VDO as it matches the factory. They are typically very similar in price too. I guess it comes down to aesthetics.

I agree with Max. Do it once, do it right. Personally, I like the looks of the Motec ADL over the Stack. The former might be my next big purchase this year. Just need to sweet talk my mechanic (a Motec dealer) into a really good deal

Wow, great info guys thanks. I was thinking more like what Stack offers. I still have not seen the motec system.

How would this hook up to the factory harness w/ all the wiring? I think that would get really ugly...
Thanks

Dave’s is the Stack street dash. Nice piece. Not cheap, but then again quality is not cheap!!
Keep an eye out for the Race Technology dataloging dash – nice piece. Its under development and not out yet. They sent me some preliminary info, I will see if I can dig it up.

I'm running a boost gauge and in the future going to run a Wideband a/f. If that helps at all.

Ok, I think I have decided then. Thanks for all the info. One more question though, how would a cluster like that hook up with the stock DME/KLR in? If it has its own sensors, how would that work?

TurboX-
Thanks for the info but I'm looking for a replacement of the stock cluster so I don't think a 2 gauge pod will work, you know? We might use that with the other cluster but I haven't decided yet.

The only signals that come from the DME are Boost and RPM. Everything else comes off a seperate sensor or relay.

The only "problems" I see are matching the sensor outputs to the new gage inputs. By matching I'm referring to making sure the sensor outputs are of the correct voltage and polarity.
