S2 or 968 6 speed gearbox?

Ditto. Have to open the box anyway to put in the Quaife. Throw on a short 3rd, 4th and 5th and go. Not the cheapest option, but the best option rarely is ... imho

Some of the Motec type in-car displays derive their speed reading from a sensor much like the one used for distributorless ingition systems only that they mount the toothed wheel on one of the half shafts. Im looking into this alternative.

I recently purchased an 86, 951 which has a 90 S2 rear end installed. The car has several other mods, and with them I would not want a 6th gear for street use. I am at full boost at 3100 rpm, and have a hard time keeping the car straight in 1st and 2nd gear. I have not had the car dyno'd, but the PO "claimed" 292 rwhp. Mods include; MAF with stage ll chip, 55# injectors, Aluminum flywheel, Centerforce clutch and PP, Jacobs coil and wires, cat bypass, manual boost control at 18#.
Personally, I dont know if this adds up to 292 hp, or not. My feeling is that the flywheel, clutch, and S2 rear end have most to do with the cars preformance than the rest of the stuff. As the PO said " even a stock motor has more power than you need for street use. It's all about getting to boost quicker than the next guy".

Yea I have thought of the 6-speed in my car as well, but I am more worried about just a LSD then getting different gearing really. If you were going to do it, the 6 speed or S2 tranny with the LSD, that would be a WHOLE different car. You would have lower gears plus have the rear sit down more because you can use that power on both wheels. Either way, it should be a big difference. I am not sure how the gearing is exactly but just remember that on the highway you will have more RPM's because of the lower gears. So, then figuring out the speedo would be even harder then. Good luck, let us know what you do.
Anders: I have heard that the S2 tranny is not as strong too, but is there any hard evidece to back that up? I have wonder the same thing, I know the Turbo S tranny is strong but not sure if an S2 compared to a non-LSD 951 car is...

By the way, I know someone at the shop I go to for work has a 968 6-speed in his 951, I "think" he was telling me that he topped out at around 160ish, maybe 170. That would put him close if not right on a stock 951 tranny. That is assuming he meant the stock redline as well.

My mechanic, who is a race prep guy, told me that the rear end was as strong, and possible stronger than a stock 951 unit. The problem is that it has no cooler. Because of that he reccommended aginst frequent hard track use. A DE now and then, OK, but not good for a dedicated track car.

The 6-spd is a great box, it takes some time to get used to it.. I love the gearing on the 6-spd..
My old 3.0L 951, had a modifed 951 gearbox with shorter gears and S2 R&P, talk about acceleration..
You can add an external cooler to the 968 transaxle, it's recommended for track use..

Yea, You can always just figure it out, but how do you get the speedo to be on then? If you are driving around town, you don't want to look at your gear, then at RPM and then think how fast you are going.

I think I have a solution for the speedo for cars equipped with ABS. Years back, someone sent me the info, basically the same way a 968 speedo works...
Cars without ABS, there was a post years ago for someone in CA that got it to work..
Now finding the documents will be tough as a while back I experienced a hard disk crash. I'll look for a printout..

If it is just the shorter gearing you long for, and your 951 gearbox is in good shape, it would be far cheaper to just get custom gears in your 951 unit than to swap it out for even an S2 gearbox.
Regarding the 968 tranny - I'm not a big fan of 6 speeds, and based on the difficulties involved in making it work for your 951, I'd stay away.
