Default 2.8 liter stroker pass CA smog woo hoo

Passed the California dyno smog test on the first try with no tweaking - woohoo!

Brief stuff on this 1987 engine.
- 2.8 liter stoker
- Milledge #3 CAMS
- Vitesse chips - MAF & Mafterburner
- Big injectors
- Lindsey's CAT, which is tiny.
- 200 miles on the motor.

my results:

15mpm, 2255RPM
%CO2 = 14.8
%O2 = 0.7
HC = 39 (116 max)
CO = 0.22 (0.74 max)
NO = 378 (791 max)

25mph, 2165RPM
%CO2 = 15
%O2 = 0.5
HC = 55 (91 max)
CO = 0.31 (0.62 max)
NO = 247 (730 max)

It's legal, so I finally get to start tuning this puppy.

How do you pass the visual part with no CARB EO numbers on the mods?

Congrats!

I wonder if part of the problem everyone is having with NOx has to do with carbon build up? Those NOx numbers are sooo low compared, I wonder if they are related to the "newness" of the internals? Anyone else smog a newly rebuilt motor in CA lately?

How the hell are they going to tell it's a stroker? The injectors they MIGHT catch if they're REALLY thorough, but everything else is internal. The cat just has to be present - they only check to see if you've got one. The only thing that I can see that might end up in you failing the visual is the MAF but that may have an exemption. If not, it's easy enough to swap the stock box back on temporarily. Some garages might even "look the other way" on that one too - I had one that did with an open-element air cleaner on my old truck. The guy just said "technically I can fail you for that, just don't have it on when you come back here".

Tom,

Not in my case. When I had Lindsey Racing do their magic on my head, I removed all the carbon from the tops of my pistons. Not a spec of carbon left, but I did not have much in the first place.

SL,

So it looks like your CO2 and O2 numbers are in line with the others that have passed. The key being, that you have the correct smog A/F ratio. Very interesting though, as I have heard great things about Millege cams and have wondered how they would fair with the smog ****'s. Looks like I may entertain purchasing one of his cams. I am also curious, do you have a wide band? If so, what is your A/F ratio at 2200 rpm?

I guess you didn't test with different chips to compare results.. So far Vitesse chips passed smod in various states (MD, GA and now CA).. However, all chips are for off-road use only!!!

I was mainly worried about the CAM as well, but it seemed to work out right. The car sounds very different with his CAM - imagine "lumpy lumpy" idle at a smog station!, kinda funny. - "it could be stock, yea right." Oh and don't look at that shiny Lindsey Intake or that crankcase breather hose, yes the car came with headers.. just not the equal length kind The A/F hovered around 14.7-15.0 thoughout the entire test, even on Load. I datalogged it but need to clean it up.

No I didn't compare chips, because your chips are the only ones that worked on this new engine!.... almost done with the breakin period. The car will be driven 90% of the time, off-road. However, I needed the flexibility to occasionally drive it on the street legally.

I will also tell you that the carbon build up is not likely to be the problem. I just rebuilt my motor 5,000 miles ago so I doubt its gotten bad enough to cause my issues.

When you say "big injectors"....how big? 55lb/hr? 75lb/hr?

I'm trying to narrow down the causes of our failures and I would like to rule out big injectors

That's good to know. Did you use the stock heat range for spark plugs or one range colder?

So far I can say that the following does not seem to be the problem
1) MAF kits
2) injectors larger than stock
3) catalytic converter
4) carbon build up

that leaves
5) injectors
6) 02 sensor - mine is new but I have horrible grounds on my car
7) fuel mixture
