Default Anyone ever rewire their fuel injectors?

I think a few wires going to the connectors at the injectors are getting cracked and need to be replaced (in the harness itself), specifically the wires at my #1 injector. Can you just cut into the harness and splice new wires and install new connectors? Reason i ask, is that I know the reference sensors really can't be spliced (well then can, sort of). Are there any reasons why you could not do this? I would like to cut into the harness back by the firewall, and just run all new wires to all of the injectors, along with new connectors. Any thoughts?

In my picture you can kind of see the electrical tape right by the #1 injector connection (fuel line cuts the view a little), I cut the boot open to inspect the wires which indeed are about shot.

Yup, thanks ian. It is your old intake. Intercooler pipes are getting powdercoated white, should be done this week. It looks awesome. Did you just cut the injector wires back by the firewall, or rewire them all the way back to the DME connector?

actually just near the connection point .. With the connectors and the right amount if wire you could start the splice where ever you want. You'll be suprised how poor the wires are under the injector boot. Well mine were very ugly. I'm actually going to go with a all new harness. If ya want 20.00 plus shipping and connectors are yours. About 2 months old.

hey also are while your at it powder coat the water intake pipe and piece that feeds it into the head . While its apart looks good when its done ....stops the corrosion often seen in this area.

I rewired my injectors back to a point between the fuel rail and firewall and that has worked fine. That eliminated a bunch of hard & cracked wiring.

I sent Ian some part# for the injector connectors that NAPA sells. They basically have two types. One is a connector with 15cm of wire pre-attached with strain-relief grommets where wire enters the connector. This grommet does the weather-proofing seal as well. This is the easiest connector to use by just cutting off the old wire a couple inches away from the end and using butt-splices. This uses a finger-operated spring-clip, so no fumbling with flat-head screwdrivers to pry off the rectangular spring like the stock design.

The other connector is a bare plastic housing that requires a boot and connector pins. You'll have to trim off the old connectors near the end to preserve as much wire-length as possible. Then thread the wires through a new boot, then the connector. THen solder the pins to the wire and pull into the connector. This also comes with the simpler spring-clip and gives a more authentic look, but requires a lot more labor to install.

It should be simple to do with a three prong male/female connector back at the firewall area like OZ951 suggested. DME wire 15 fires injectors 1 & 2, DME wire 14 fires 3 & 4, and the ground comes from the KLR pin #6. Get a nice 16 gauge wire and build the harness, soldering in the wires in a three prong connector at the back.

Thanks Ski. Anyone have wire/heat shrink recomendations? I just added another item on the electrical/fuel system refurb. Looks pretty simple, cut orig heat shrink back to main spice point where harness goes into protective boot, spice and heat shrink back to orig lengths.

Can you solder the wires or must you use the crimps?

I would solder every connection on the car with the exception of the O2 sensor

Two things. Did you notice a performave difference? Why can't you solder an O2 sensor?
