How do I tell if strut mount needs replacement?
I just pulled one of the springs and stock struts out of my 86 951. I will be doing the koni conversion from paragon. The car has 60k miles on it. Should I just go ahead and replace the mounts, or is there some sign that showes they should be replaced?

Usually you can check them in the car by grabbing the strut and trying to get it to move. If the upper mount is busted, you will be able to move the strut side to side front to back, etc. Don't know how you would check it otherwise. If they are the original mounts, they need to be replaced as that rubber is 20 years old and more than likely collapsed.

You're unlikely to be able to budge the strut even with a blown mount if the car's weight is on it. Jack up the car and then try wiggling the strut top, or just eyeball the rubber mount - if it's severely cracked, you'll probably want a new one.

You could measure the distance between the motor mount and engine support as the manual indicated (PM me to get what the manual says).

And that would tell you exactly nothing related to your question.

sorry........
Back to the issue, i replaced those mounts (along with the seals) since the whole front suspension was being tackled, basically replacing all bushings and seals (including springs and struts).

Most of the early style mounts I have seen were shot. The factory replacement parts are not too expensive, but the updated mounts provide much better feel. The KLA mount is a good alternative to the high dollar factory updated mount. Of course, you can always go the Racer's Edge camber plates route.

The seal is $2.39 from Paragon products.
Contact Jason, they have the updated Strut Mount Kit for $87 (which includes all the seals and washers for the strut mount).
