Default 87 951 on ebay...fixable?

Hey guys-
Saw this on ebay today
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eB...510373314&rd=1

I've been looking around for an 87-88 951, but I think the repairs on this one might be waaay out of my league.

Hard to say. Zero records for one would be a bad deal. Exhaust leak would be easy fix, more than likely the exhaust headers are cracked which is typical. Bad running could be that and maybe vacuum issues, who knows. Thats a car that you plan on just dumping in 2k right away in parts (and do the work yourself) to get it up to par. If you get lucky and spend less, then consider it a good deal. Could have a bad clutch, could have a bad turbo, you never know.

If it was local I would look into it, but as Karl stated above you could be getting yourself into a world of trouble with all of the unknowns.

Start addings the costs up of all things that could be wrong and you would have been better off paying 6k for one that is well put together.....
but then again there are some hidden jems out there, so you never know.

Very true guys. I'd definitely look into it more if it was closer.

As for myself, I'm just looking around right now, but I'll probably be looking to buy sometime in Jan/Feb. I'm a college student, so my budget is low; but I'd like to spend less than 8k for a daily driver 951 or possibly an S2.

Touché, but maybe I could have a bit left over for a small boat perhaps?

A small boat? Are you saying you have over 10 grand? If you have that much, buy a nice car its well worth your time to find one that isnt a complete project.

I've seen some 951's in decent shape for 6k (alright 2 in the last few months). All I'm saying is that with 8k, I could get a 6k 951 and a 2k Laser or I get the boat next year. Whatever the case, the 951 comes first.

I suspect that this car is best suited to a race/track car project. Body OK, interiour mediocre, most everything in suspension likely worn out, A/C probably non-functional, etc. If you were going to ditch most of the interior, refresh the motor somewhat (belts, HG, turbo rebuild), and replace/rebuild the suspension and brakes, this would be an OK starting point, as the old stuff is probably totally depleted.
