How fast have you removed the cyl. head?

The key question is whether or not the cam tower has ever been off. The bolts that hold it to the head on the inside are a bitch to get out. As are the ones on the exhaust side. They tend to strip. That is the horrible part. If the tower has been off recently, it wouldn't be that bad.

I used a allen head attatched to a extension to get inside those and break them up. It wasent that bad. Although when the first one broke(loctight) I was a little freaked out...by the time we were on the last few I realized that was normal.lol.
Go out and buy some really long allen keys and you should be fine.

Ha!
Good thread
I cant say. Removal of the head is usually 2-3 days with me. Done it 3x now in the car and 2x on an engine stand. I can get pretty sloppy with the hardware now though (not always a good thing . . .) since I can figure out later where things go.

I did not remove the cylinder head myself yet but my previous GURU (now im using someone else who's better ) did replace the headgasket, wasterpump, belts/rollers and front seals in 5 hours on the NA, that was including drilling out a broken intake manifold allen head.

My GURU took off a 944 turbo engine in <2 hours i was actually sitting waiting for my car while there did that.

Hosrom,
This thread is about people working on their own cars, not their mechanics doing it for them. Do you have a point or actual experience? Less then 2 hours to pull a motor? Do you have any idea what needs to come off? Any other guy here who has actually DONE this job will call BS as well.
I think you made a typo but hey if you can get a motor pulled for less then 2 hours shop rate, more power to you. With that type of efficiency you don't need rennlist at all. Unless of course your guru found a bottle in the desert and a genie helps him with his R&R's.

Anyways, i would like to see you try working on a 951 when you do not have a garage and you live in a place where simple tools are such headaches to access/purchase.
Instead of saying those remarks about me on the thread, you could have made a wiser move by PM me your point in order not to start hijacking the thread.
Sticking back to the thread, in MY view (and other people's views according to most threads) is that i would like to see a difference between time needed between specialists and indivisual work since not all of us have access to certain tools as mentioned previously.
That way, if someone (such as myself or anyone else) were to let a shop remove the clyinder head/engine whatever could have a rough idea on time needed since shops charges are based on time.
Sorry guys if i were to cause a hijacked thread.
PS, after removing my intake manifold and turbocharger and the advise i got from people on "how-to's" my answer to you is YES, i DO know what needs to come off. If you were to search on a recent thread regarding 'estimates and what really happens', it would show you the difference between what i was TOLD by people here on the board and what REALLY happened, try reading that post first because i do NOT BS here, and YOU should know that very well.

No one here cares if you work on your car or not. Many of my closest friends don't work on their 951's either, there's nothing wrong with that. Just don't go posting outrageous stuff like that. As far as what people post around here, especially regarding times to get things accomplished, many people quote time that it took someone else to get it done for them. So now book time has become actual time and it snowballs....... see the pattern?
