Default Rearend Noise

Hey Gentlemen,

I've searched for this but ran out of sugguestions as to what my car's ailment is. Problem is an intermittent clicking sound coming from the rear of my 88 951. The sound only happens in gear and at low speeds. I haven't had any driveability issues (not yet anyway) but I suspect it's a cv joint. What baffles me is that this sound will sometimes last a week and then disappear the next week. Any help would be great guys.

Thanks,

Jason

Probably the CV joints. I've had a similar noise before: more of a whining noise that appeared only when cold. It disapeeared after repacking the CV joints with fresh grease.

It's more of a loud clunking than a whine. TTT

Sounds like a CV issue. When mine went out a few years back, it was a thump thump thump and did not occur all of the time, mainly in the cold and/or wet.

The CV may need some cleaning and regreasing if you are lucky.

Does the noise come while turning?

I had that noise which scared the heck out of me, turned out to be a pebble that got suck between the threads of the tire

I had a problem similar to this about a year ago. Mine ended up being vertical movement of the rear brake pads. I had spent a total of at least 3 days underneath that car banging on everything and finally noticed that it didn't make the sound when I was on the brakes.
