Does the light work? Thats what I go by.
There was a thread on how to clean out the gas sending unit a few days ago and the guy said it wasn't hard. I think the thread was on the 968/944/924/951 forum though. Search there for it.

J Chen: I believe you asked about this before right? it didn't help? As RMills944 mentioned, there was apost regarding cleaning the sender, if you don't find it here is a helpful link to clarks-garage regarding testing/cleaning and replacing the fuel level sender:http://www.clarks-garage.com/shop-manual/elect-13.htm

It could be several things.
Gauge - Usually if the gauge fails you have no reading, but the face of the gauge is just a sticker and it can move/be ajdusted.
Wiring - bad connection at gauge or sender could give bad reading (excessive resistance), or wiring is shorting to ground.
Sender - a heavy float would give inacurate reading. Worn sweep contactor usually will cause the needle to intermittently drop. If the float arm gets bent, that will give erroneus readings.
Fuel Tank - If you put a large dent in the tank that displaces fuel, you will get inacurate readings.
