Theres a ghost cooming out of your car! 944s really DO have the devil in them!

Looks awsome but, i thought it usually came out like, fire color, not this purple. Or does it turn to that in a second? I dont know, howd you do it and props to ya.

I took those vids, Yes it comes out more blue than anything else. It was fun to catch the flames, we went out in my daily driver and chased JJ's dads car. Volvo 940s can not keep up. lol . Anyways it is quite ez to get that car to blow flames just heat up the exhaust good, get on it, and shift. "POP". Anyways I will let JJ explain, as he is better at this than I am.

In the daytime it looks mostly orangey, at night it's mostly blue.

Anyways, that happens with pretty much any turbo car running a no-cat exhaust It's easier to see the concept with an atmospheric blow-off valve, but even with a recirculated BOV (or Bypass Valve, or Diverter Valve, pick your acronym ) at higher boost it will do it. When the throttle shuts under boost, the BOV/BPV/etc opens to vent that pressurized air so that the shock waves in the pressurized air bouncing off the throttle plate don't make it back to the turbo and damage the blades. Since this air has been measured by the MAFS already, the computer is opening the injectors for all this air, and since that air doesn't make it to the engine, the mixture goes lean for a split second, and that extra fuel vapor in the exhaust combusts when it hits hot enough metal in the exhaust and makes the flame out the tailpipe. The stock BPV on the 951 redirects this air into the pipe between the turbo and the MAFS, so that the vented air circulates back through the turbo, preventing more air (in theory) from entering the MAFS to cause that rich condition (it doesn't prevent it completely but it reduces it significantly. The air circulating through the turbo also allows it to stay spooled a bit longer so that there is less lag between shifts).

Sorry if that was a bit lengthy. It's a lot easier to open the hood and point at stuff It doesn't blow flames as much with normal driving, but if you're driving it hard (e.g. Tail of the Dragon, track event, etc) it will start to shoot flames out regularly once the exhaust gets nice and heated up...

Cool. I thought for sure you needed to run catless to get falmes. guess i was right. And i was pretty sure it was the exhaust pipe getting hot enough,as right. But dont worry about it being long, read the whole thing twice. Awsome info, thanks. Thing is, im in cali and we must run a cat. Im sure you couldnt tell if someone wernt of course... Until flames start shootin out. Ill try runnin catless for awhile and see how it looks under normal driving. I dont mind it shootin under hard driving, ill probably be gettin tickets for that anyways, whats another?

thanks again Jsquared
