Default Tire questions

Hi,

Just bought an 86 944 Turbo. I'm very happy with the car so far. Along with the car I got a set of slicks and some 17x9(8?) wheels. The slicks are 245/45/16. My question is would the slicks fit on the stock 16" wheels? I'd like to use them for the track and the Big 17x9s for the street.

What sizes would you guys reccomend for the street on 17x9s?

Thanks. Sorry if it is a newb question, but this is my first porsche and I'm not familiar at all with tire options on this car.

The 245 slicks will fit on standard 16" wheels if the wheels are wide enough? Normally with an 86 car you would have 225s on front 7" wheels and 245s on the rear 8"

With 17" wheels you would normally have 7.5 atthe front with 225/45 tires and 9" at the rear with 255/40 tires. Am I right in saying you have 4 9" wheels?

It sounds like you have 4 17" rear wheels, and 4 16" rear tires, so not a perfectly matched set

Thanks for the reply.

I'm actually not entirely sure on all of the dimensions becuase I dont' have them here. I could have just been looking at rears and thinking they were all the same. The wheels are still at the shop. The slicks are off the shop owners track 944. So maybe they are not all 245s. The 17" wheels were supposedly off of a 928. I'll get more clarification tomorrow.

Ok, I got more info on the rims and tires. The slicks are 225 front and 245 rear. Looks like they will fit the stock phone dials ok.

The other rims are 17X8 front and 17x9 in the rear. The rears have 265/40s on them already. I test fitted the rears and they look to be ok.

I have a similar question: I've got an '86 Turbo that's been upgraded to the later S2/Turbo S suspension (plus other mods). I've got a set of the DS90 rims on now, with the recommended 205/50/16s front and 225/50/16s rear. I'm getting a set of Yokohama AVS ES100s and my question is should I stick with the current sizes, or go up to the 255/50/16s in front and the 245/45/16s in the rear?

Would that be more tire than optimum? I'm very interested in doing some autocrossing and have heard that going with equal sizes front and back is recommended? The car is nicely balanced as is, so I don't want to go big just to go big, but also don't want to miss an opportunity to upgrade if it makes sense -- any an all advice greatly appreciated!

Thanks,
CAG4

Ok, I went to the autoX today with the stock 205/225 combo. They had pretty new RE750s and I was able to overpower the tires pretty easily. I had the 265/40s on earlier this weekend and had a lot harder time overpowering them. Too bad I took them off for autocross. From my limited experience I'd say upgrade. The 265s helped out a lot and I'm sure the slicks on stock rims will be tons better than any street tire.

This is just IMHO. I've only had the car a week and have had AWD/ FWD cars for the past 8 years or so. I'm pretty rusty driving RWD, but better grip would have helped at the autoX.
