My friend (Japanese) has a few of the Defi Link meter BF gauges with the controller. They are pretty slick, but substantially more expensive than an Autometer or VDO. They would seem a little out of place in a 944, but that's just my opinion. They look nice in his WRX.

I would much prefer VDO over Autometer, just to keep everything looking as consistent as possible. Having said this, I do think that my black autometer gauges blend in pretty well. For me, the sticking point on going VDO is that they don't have an AF gauge.
