Help chipping a 1989 951
I am an ex specmiata racer with past experience in a 1988 951S as an instructor at PCA driving events. The car I owned came with Autothority stage II chips and at the time worked beautifully for my purposes and skill levels. I sold it about five years ago when I went Miata. Upon leaving racing, I purchased an '89 951 stock. I intend to return to instruction and would like to goose it a bit with a reasonable financial outlay. Since I sold my first Turbo, many improvements have clearly been made. I called and spoke with Danno who suggested that with chips, wastegate shim, boost control and fuel pressure rail I could see between 270-290 at the rear wheels (the car does have a test pipe). This would be more than adequate for me. Unfortunately in browsing this forum the news and complaints about Danno have made me nervous. Could someone suggest an alternative (Vitesse, Lindsey) and what parts would yield a similar result to what Danno suggested I could achieve. TIA.

Vitesses' new chips, set up with factory AFM, stock injectors, LBE, shimmed wastegate, 3bar or AFPR, 15.5 psi, have been consistently yielding 235-240 rwhp and 265-280 ft-lbs of torque; good idle and very smooth operation.
There is a thread over on the second page "new vitesse chip", search that.
There is a dyno on the website, www.vitesseracing.com then catalog, then 951, then chips.

I also recommend the Vitesse chips. Bret quoted you HP #'s from an 86 951 with a 26/6 turbo. Since you have the 26/8 you should easily see over 270 RWHP. You won't find better drivability and HP then the Vitesse chips.

See, 4 out of 5 951 owners recommend it....
Sorry, it's late and I made the mistake of telling my wife a good (at least I thought) blonde joke, so I'm a bit out of sorts this evening.

I've been playing with a set of Vitesse chips lately and so far they're great. The support I've gotten from Vitesse has also been superb - bordering on "wow doesn't that guy ever sleep". I've never had a vendor answer ALL my questions and emails so quickly.

Thank you
Gentlemen,
Thank you all for your quick responses. My one claim to fame is that I am good at solitciting advice and then following it. This does not require a ton of thought: Vitesse it is. Will I need customized chips or will stock do the trick?

Hey David,
I don't have experience w/ the Vitesse products, but I had the Weltmeister chips (with 3 bar FPR and wastegate shim) in my car and thought they were fine. They yielded a safe increase of ~40 hp. Even Danno said they were some of the safest chips (for engine longevity). Add the Lindsey boost enhancer for faster spool up.

David, the generic MY89 AFM chips are what you need not the custom ones. As I suggested in our phone conversation few weeks back, you will need a 3bar fuel pressure regulator. You can get one directly from Paragon Products or I can get you one.
