Default Fuel vapor purge delete

While working on my '87 951 last night, I checked the diaphram on the purge valve unit and found that its shot. I am also assuming the the 17 year old charcoal cannister is well past its prime, so I am planning on deleting this from my car. Since I don't have to worry about emission testing (yet, anyway...), I am thinking its no big deal, right? I did a search here and it sounds like a few folks are doing this without ill effect.

Basically, I can cap off the vacuum fittings on the throttle body and the j-boot, eliminate the line that runs to the manifold, leave the thermo switch disconnected and reroute the line that runs back to the fuel tank, and I am done, right?

Anyone have any words of advise?

Regards,

I did that when I pulled off my intake, it makes things soo much less confusing. I took the charcoal cannister off, plugged the j-boot line, pluged the vac line from the throttle body, and I just left lines off the heater valve under the intake. I also put silicon vac lines and updated the hoses under the intake to the brake booster with the turbo-s line. I deleted my cycling valve as well, less stuff to break.

Same here, I didnt want fuel vapours in the engine bay, so I cut the line back at the fuel tank and put a filter over it.

How have you solved the tank ventilation after deleting the system.I noticed massive vacuum in the tank ,seems that It doesn't breath at all...it might collapse unless opening the tank cap once in a while.
Do you make a small hole in the cap or is there somehow more sofisticated system somewhere??
BTW,definetely no gas smell at the moment...

But where's the end of that line in your solution? I didn't remove the line,so the end is in the engine bay,and it isn't very healthy to keep it open there...so I blocked it.
And,if removed completely,is there a risk of tank leakage?
Has anyone used somekind of pressure relief valve?

That would be a problem, Pete... you don't want that line blocked off. I am planning on removing it from the firewall back to the tank, and then rerouting it to exit near the right rear of the car with a breather on it (ala a Harley oil breather line). If you close that line off, you do indeed create a vacuum in the gas tank that would need to be relieved every now and then.

Can't we just use a vented gas cap and throw all the purge system parts out?

I want to do this, because I'm getting fuel vapors entering my cabin through the air vents. Can someone post a step by step, do we HAVE to remove the intake manifold to get it done? Where is the charcoal canister located? I hear you can save up to 20lbs by ditching it alone.

Also, I'm getting my car smogged soon, will this affect CALIFORNIA (aka gayest emissions laws in the world) emissions results?

I did what chris did, except I left the J-boot connection and did not remove the charcoal canister. So far no fuel vapors in the car.

Cyrus, you will not have to remove the intake to get rid of the fuel purge system.

Cyrus, I am pretty sure you don't want to do that or you will have some problems getting smogged in CA.

10cm away from the tank.

i would recommend deleting the purge system , replacing the vac lines, pulling the intake and replacing boost hoses at once. I did it in 6 hours and had the car running again. You have to remove the plastic fender well to get the charcoal cannister off, it takes like 15 mins if that.
