Default Spark plug recommendations please

Hi Guys,

I'm running Guru's 18psi chips with a 3 bar FPR and a Bursch test pipe. I'm getting a little detonation in the midrange at full throttle/boost. Rather than back off the boost or the timing, I was first thinking of trying a plug that is one heat range colder than the factory plug recommendation. I'm running an NGK stock heat range plug right now.

Suggestions?

TIA!

You should definitely run one range colder. Lots have luck with the NGKs one heat range colder. I am running Densos and they work fine (I wanted to try something different). You could also try Bosch coppers or different silver or iridium versions. Stay away from Platinum.

If you need a cross reference go to www.sparkplugs.com. You can enter the stock part number in and then find the equivalent. Then go to a colder heat range.

This MIGHT solve your problem. It could also be that your fuel is not of an adequate octane for his 18psi setting. I would try the plugs first. Even at 15psi you should run the colder plugs.

I just started running Beru Silverstone. Don't have an opinion on them yet, but I've heard a lot of good stuff about them in 951's

Next colder on the NGK line is the BPR7___ plugs - stock is BR6___.

I running a similar setup sans the test pipe. I too get detonation in the midrange. I dialed the boost down a tiny bit which helped.

I am running NGK iridiums 1 range colder than stock.

Danno thinks that 2 ranges might be better with the 18lb chips.

Unfortuanately, I cannot get any gas higher than 91 octane in Cali, so not much I can do there (cannot afford race gas and cannot find xylene/toluene in L.A.).

Hopefully, the H20 injection will fix the pinging, but I will not have time to install it for a while.

Let me know what you find out.

Sincerely,
j

Home Depot sells Xylene in FL, NJ and AZ. I would expect that they would have it in CA as well.

They do, but according to the one that I called that had it (a couple others did not), it not available in any size larger than 1 qt. 1qt costs just under $7, which does not sound like it is in line with what other Rennlisters are paying.
I did not mean to hijack this thread, sorry!

Sincerely,

Go there. The larger cans are on a different level, and the person probably didn't look well.

Sherwin Williams has 5 gals of xylene for $38.00 They also have tolene 1 gallon. They don't have tolene 5 gallons because people make drugs out of it. Xylene has higher octane, anyway.

jasoncoker,

I've been buying 1 gallon cans of Toluene from Dulux paint stores (they also sell them at Sherwin Williams) for around $7.00. Mixed with a tank of gas, the octane is raised just enough to get rid of most of the pinging. However, as previously mentioned in this thread, my local store started getting suspicious when I was coming in once a week to buy Toluene. So I'm trying to get the car to run happily on 91 octane.

I have the BPR7EIX iridium on order as well as a new set of wires. Should be able to put them in next week and report back on results.

Thanks again guys!

I buy 5 gallon pails of Toluene or Xylene (whichever is in stock) from the local Sherwin Williams - I just tell them I was blending it with gas to raise the octane rating, they didn't care.

I run Beru Ultra-X these are nickel plated, copper core, quad. electrode plugs. They were recommended for me by Kirk down at Zim's Autotechnik in Texas.
