Does the Stock 951 have a Rev-Limiter?

I remember reading somewhere that the 951 has a "soft" rev limiter that cuts out two cylinders only. It certainly felt like a high-speed miss when I hit it on the track yesterday. Due to the magic of binary math and our 8 bit DME computers, the limit is actally set at 6480 rpm stock. Most aftermarket chips select the next higher available rev limit value, which works out to 7,000 rpm. According to Danno it is not possible to select a value between these two using the stock DME.

The stock 951 fuel system is batch fired, all 4 at once per revolution. Fuel cut at redline means all injectors are shut off. The stock rev limit is 6480, but stating 6500 is sufficient. Resolution of RPM in the 951 Motronic is in intervals of 40. You can set it anywhere from 0 to 10200 rpm. The E30 M3 uses the same core DME as the 944/951 and handles rev limits up to 8000 rpm easily.

Hey Guys,
Hope this does'nt make you sick. I've always had this ambition
of transplanting an Alfa V6 with turbocharging in the 951.
Among the mass produced engine, it's super smooth & the
sound of the engine will send shivers down your spine.
Aside form the 365 Daytona & the Dino 246, I've never heard
another engine that sounds this good. Before you guys start
screaming at me about cost, there're lots of V6 here that I can
buy cheaply.

Race Director
hitting the rev limiter is not good. Nothing will break if you hit it once in while, but don't sit on it. In m 944-spec car I have hit the limiter once or twice. Never fun. Feels like you just stomped on he brakes and you certainly are not faster if you ridding it.
Right now I have a chip in my 944 NA and while I don't take it past 6200 RPM for the most part, it is quite easy at the start of a race in all the noise to forget your engine speed. Those are times it nice not to feel the bang on the limiter. Heck the slow down from the limit can lose you a place.
Then again if you have control of the field it is nice to "sit" at a particular speed hoping to catch a few guys napping and have them hit the limiter.
