Use a wood rod and tap the piston up into the bore.

Tap lightly on the rod bolts with a rubber hammer. That should start to get the end caps off. They should be fairly easy to get off after that.

I tend to lightly tap the side of the caps with the wooden end of a hammer. Any of the suggestions listed above will work, just be gentle.

DO NOT SCRATCH THE CRANKSHAFT JOURNALS. Once you get the connecing rod cap loose, hold the rod so that the studs DO NOT touch the crankshaft. Have ready some short lengths of shrink tubing or other thin tube the right size that you can slip over the studs. Then push the piston up far enough to remove the upper bearing half.

I meant to add that. It's amazing how soft the crank is when it is tapped by a rod bolt. I usually fit some short lengths of vacuum hose over the rod bolts as soon as I pull the cap.
