Good stereo under $400
Any suggestions on what kind of stereo (under $400) should I get for my 1986 951? Also would appreciate suggestions for speakers and amps.
Thanks in advance
PS I tried search, but it was not working

My system:
Alpine HU (CDA-9807)
Soundstream 40x4 Amp (picasso?)
MB Quart RSD 213 (front)
MB Quart RKC 116 (rear)
I think the sound from this is miles beyond the aftermarket 4x6's that the owner had installed. I haven't finished the install, but just the rears put out excellent sound.

Just a little word of advice, if you have EVER done the back speakers in a 944/951, you know that you don't want to mess around and try all different speakers. Do it once the right time with good speakers, TRUST ME! I put some of my older 4x6's in the rear from my old car and now wish I just went out and got new ones, the ones in it now are really good but they already have 2 years of use on them.

If your talking head unit which I think you are then I would suggest a Nakamichi. It's probably the only thing on the market that still matches our cars dash. Check ebay, I've seen new ones there for around $300. I've had an MB-75 for about five years now and love it. Hope this helps....

"Danton - how well does the MB-75 play CD-Rs?"
Well it's strange. If the car is cool, like not sitting in the sun then it plays them fine. But if the car has been sitting in the sun and it's hot inside then I get kinda of a screeching sound mixed in with the music. But under all conditions it plays original cd's perfect. Maybe this is just my particular unit but I'm not sure.

I just sold my car last weekend and had the stereo taken out of it. I have custom 4" MB Quart speakers for the front doors for sale. They fit with no modification and can be switched back to stock no problem. I paid $500 for the speakers, not including the custom speaker enclosures. I have no need for them anymore, if anyone is interested, make me an offer. They also have crossovers for each speaker.

$400 could get you into some 4" focal access coaxes, adaptor plates and a decent alpine or eclipse headunit. unless the foam surrounds on the rears are dryrotted or they are otherwise damaged, I don't think it's worth spending money on them in a budget audio system upgrade, just fade the system more to the front and let the better speakers do the work, you'll have better stereo imaging that way anyway.
for a little more money, I'd suggest having someone professional build out the door panel to fit a decent 5 1/4 or 6 1/2, and probably add a pair of 8" or 10" subwoofers in the rear cubbies. the spare tire well is a nice place to stash a couple of amplifiers, something like zapco, rockford power, JL, etc.
I put a pair of ADS 4" IM Components into the front doors of my black 951, custom built my own adaptor plates to fit the 4x6 holes, and ran an alpine amp for them, and a rockford amp for a single 8" ADS 308RS dual voice coil sub in the back -- it sounded pretty decent, but to be honest, going too crazy in a 951 is silly, you either need to add hundreds of dollars and dozens of pounds of sound deadening materials, or just accept that something that plays relatively loud and decently clean and can be heard over the engine is good enough

Assuming that you plan to DIY, here's a tip for the rear window:
Buy plastic clothesline. It only costs about $1.50, and it works perfectly for roping the windows back in. No fuss, no muss -- it's exactly the right size/flexibility. It's really not a bad job at all if you have the right tool. It took my wife and I roughly three tries per window. Neither of us are particularly handy.
