Default how to shim a wastegate

I was reading somewhere that you can just use washers to shim the wastegate. I'm cheap so I'm hoping thats possible. Can someone go over the steps to shimming a wastegate and the such?

All you need to do is to release the 3 nuts that locks
the actuator to the wastegate body. After releasing
the nut & allen bolt lift the actuator up alittle & place
the shim in between the actuator & wastegate body.
Refit the allen bolt & torque it down. That's it.

I was looking into this too, but on Clark's Garage it gave this elaborate procedure for removing the wastegate and cutting out sheet metal into an exact shape...but that's not necessary?

I was talking more about the necessity to remove the wastegate itself. According to
http://www.clarks-garage.com/shop-manual/exh-03.htm , :

"For those of you who've removed the wastegate from a 944 Turbo, I'm sure you'll agree that there is no easy way to get the wastegate out of the car. There are a number of different ways to approach getting the wastegate out but, none are simple. So, what I'll try to do here is explain just how the wastegate is mounted and how I approached getting it out. I'm certainly not claiming that my way is the best so, study the mounting arrangement and decide for yourself which way you think is easiest. "

But it sounds like taking the thing out isn't even needed?

The wastegate needs to be removed when it is faulty. For shimming, you're assuming that the wastegate is still functional despite the weak spring. No need to remove the wastegate to shim it.

I removed the wastegate on my dad's car to shim it. I didn't know much about the operation of a wastegate, so I figured it had to be removed. I did it all myself, accept my dad held the exhaust tip so the whole thing didnt slam down when it broke loose. It took me forever to get the exhaust off, but it went back on pretty easily.

I put the whole thing backtogether without help.

My wastegate was not easy to get off, and yes you have to get it off to shim it. If you are a "little person" with little tools you might be able to, I don't see how you can do it with it on the car. I had 3 bolts break off in one flange and it still would not come off. I had to wait a few months to try it again and it finally came off. The shimming part is damn easy and installation back into the car is not bad, if the wastegate has never been taken off, it is usually a royal pain in the *** to do. I recommend spraying the bolts with penetration oil a few days before attempting to take it off.

Does anyone have pictures/proceedure on replacing the WG on the 1-piece X-over pipe?

Lindsey Racing showed a very good detailed process, but for the 2-piece x-over pipe.

If i remember, Shaheed asked about this? i did a search, but couldn't find anything on the 1-piece x-over pipe......is it more/less the same?

it's pretty much the same except with the two piece crossover you leave the little intake pipe bolted onto the wastegate and remove it after you pull the wastegate. with the one piece crossover you have to unbolt the intake pipe at the wastegate before it will come out.
