225/40/17 and 255/40/17 work nicely - watch the fender lip clearance and wheel offsets to make sure the wheel tire combo clears the fender lips and suspension components.

If performance per dollar value is what you're looking for, I'd recommend Kumho MX tires. They are available in those sizes as well.

Good luck!

I run 225/45 17 and 255/40 17
Thought you needed the 45 to keep diameter the same front/rear,

Those rims are the stock size that came on many 968's; that was the case for my car as well.

225's and 255's were the tire size that was used.

UK952 is correct, you should really use a 225/45R17 in the front and a 255/40R17 in the rear. The first number is just the width. Ideally you will keep the same rolling diameter (in this case 25").

As to the Nitto's try something else. Others to consider if you are looking for cheap tires:
Falken ZE-512
Fuzion ZRi
Yokohama ES100

Some to avoid like the plauge:
Kumho 712 (though to be honest I think the MX is a pile of sh*t as well)
Toyo Proxes 4
There are plenty more to avoid if you try something listed above and that is the price range you like you should be satisfied.

If you want to spend a little more (you really do get what you pay for) try:
Michelin Pilot Sport
Bridgestone Potenza S-03
Goodyear Eagle F1-GSD3

run away from the Kumho 712's Matt H mentioned. I'm glad mine finally burned off. They didn't seem to get warm at the track and squeeled the whole lap (every lap). Then they chunked and got real noisy for everyday driving. 12k miles and about 8 track hours.

do the 225's fit properly on the 7.5" (Boxster) wheels? If so, I can ditch the 205's I was going to put on them (255 vs 205, yuck).

To answer your question, yes 225's fit perfectly on 7.5" rims.

But, I thought Boxters had 7" rims not 7.5" up front.

225s fit fine on both a pair of Boxster and Boxster S wheels that I have and yes the standard Boxster 17" wheels are a 7" not 7.5"

The 225 is the max for a 7" wheel to get a good contact patch. You could put a wider tire on but the contact patch would be junk and it would be a mother to bead up.

Lowering doesnt matter the spring perch does not move (unless you have coilovers in which case why such a skinny front wheel?

Check www.tirerack.com for good availability of the most popular products. You will not find Toyo, Falken, or Nitto there however.
