I have owned a 1986 944 NA for a few years. The car died just recently, and I was able to score a bone-stock 1986 951, for $1380. But, for that price- I also got:
-leaks oil from front of engine. I replace a quart every two days.
-leaks coolant from engine/water pump? I cannot tell yet.
-power mirrors dont work. Replaced fuses, relay, and cannot find root cause. Wiring wrong?
-brake pedal pressure is stiff. Car stops- but pedal feels wooden, and is lower than clutch pedal, at rest.
-sunroof inoperable. Replaced switch, relay...still no sign of movement.
-hot air keeps coming from vents, no matter what. Is the heater valve stuck?
-rear trunk release does nothing.
-driver side front strut appears to be negative camber. The other side is straight. I know a fender bender caused this. Will stock NA struts work?
-steering wheel center is way off. I tried repositioning the steering wheel, but the off-center orientation persists. Alignment?
Other than the inherent issues above- is there anything I should be aware of? I am going to do the timing belt, balance shaft belts, and water pump this weekend. I'd like to address the oil leak too, while there. Your feedback, and experience is appreciated...

Yup, get a front reseal kit while you are in there doing the waterpump etc. No point ripping all that stuff out to do it a second time. Sunroof, check the front and rear microswitches, more than likely it is those. You can bend the contacts a little and that may be enough to get them working again. Rear trunk release motor is probably shot. You can pop the hatch and unsnap the carpet and the silver pump is against the passenger side hatch release.

do a SEARCH for most of the items you list. the hot air from the vents is probably due to the broken plastic clips - very common - inside the car, on the DS just above the gas pedal.
Remove the plastic panel and you will see the 2 heater control rods and the 2 small white plastic clips. Do a search, I had a write up on this a while back.

Doing the T-belt replace ALL front seals/belts/rollers/tensioners/waterpump/ BOTH t-stats with SEALS!
At that time, you should find if one or more hoses need to be replaced, it wouldn't be a bad idea to replace those hoses anyway.
Replace ALL fluids, the clutch takes from the brake fluid and there is a hydrolic(sp) hose that goes from the fluid reservior to the clutch slave/master cylinders (i think) there is a blue hose, replace that.....
Remove door panels and check the wiring for the windows, you may have a broken switch (small job).
The rear hatch mechanisc could benifit from lubrication and adjustment
Just hope that things like oil pan gasket and rear crank seal are fine ($$$$$$ to replace)...........

Ahhhh.........no such thing as a cheap Porsche. kidding......lol
Since you paid less than I think anyone ever has for a 951 you still be in it less than $5k and have a great car!!
Let me know if you need some 86' 951 parts, I have one parting out now and another coming (88T-S).
I'm getting to the point where I want space back in my garage and will deal.

Here is a basically complete list of parts you need. Add the seals for the oil cooler to the list "while you are in there".

2 each Lock nuts (for guard rail) 999.084.092.02
Do not drive the car or even run the engine until the belts and pump are in good order. Sounds like the pump and seals are leaking profusely! This is very bad for the belts. You need some special tools to do some of the items on this repair list. The big one is the P9201 belt tension tool. It is absolutely necessary.
Brake problem sounds like a vacuum booster gone bad.
I will repeat what someone else said, "change all of the fluids" Brake fluid, transaxle gear oil, engine oil (after the belts), coolant and probably the hoses too. If any of the hoses are soft and spongy, they are shot. Power steering fluid is one most overlook. The reservoir has a filter in the bottom of it. It is supposed to be changed at 60k mile intervals.

If you can't get the $$$$ P9201 tension tool on loan you can use the less than $20 Kriket KR-1. I would suggest having someone there that has used both tension tools the first time through as safe measure. Keiths parts list above is a great reference, I just stored it in a file I keep. Have somone pull the hatch release lever; if you hear a noise it's probably the rods w/ plastic sockets on each of the hatch pin releases need to be adjusted.
You've worked on Porsches long enough to know: Do not drive or start the car until the belt issue is resolved! Now's a good time to do the Linsey or Paragon vacuum line upgrade also. Your brake problem could also be a bad check valve in the large brake booster line.

I need help...And I am willing to commit up to $8k- if this car even has any hope. The engine- despite being porous, is still strong and tight, not tired. I have to shop for boneyard fenders and door panels, because I'm too lazy, impatient, and cheap to professionally paint new ones. Here are the priorities:
1) Replace/recover/reconditon all mechanical and electrical wear parts with OEM or higher quality components...this includes fasteners, bolts, nuts.
2)Perform critical belt jobs, including alternator/compressor and power steering belts. Replace all fluids entirely.
3)Restore interior to showroom condition, or close to it. Replace driver side front fender, door shell, strut and side skirt, with red OEM panels.
4)Change intake and exhuast components for better throughflow.
5)Increase boost at all costs...
6)Turn car over to son....
