I need to replace the catalytic converter on my 87 944 Turbo. I’ve searched the posts looking for someone who has completed the job to find out just how big of a task it is. I wasn’t able to find any posts from people who replaced their own cat. My questions are: How hard is it? How long should it take? Can I do it by myself, or do I need a second pair of hands? Do I need any special tools? Can anyone pass along any hints to make the job easier? And finally, where is the best place to buy a catalytic converter?
Thanks in advance for all of your help.
Dennis
OBTW: The shop quoted $1,100 for the repair. $765 for parts and $267 labor.

Why do you think your cat is shot? If so I've got 3 of them floating around the garage, email if you need one.
Easy job:
First spray all nuts/bolt with PB Blaster or Liquid Wrench, you need 13,14, or15 mm (I forget which) wrenchs/sockets and a universal joint and 12-16" worth of extensions, remove belly pan, unbolt old one, bolt in new one. I've done it a few times in under 15 minutes, but 30 minutes to an hour should be easy to do.
Buy new gaskets too.
Used cats go for $75-150 depending
