Can someone identify this thing?

It sucks back in the evaporated gas from the gas tank if I recall correctly. In any case, the port is after the air flow meter but before the turbo inlet. So, with it open, you will run leaner than intended, but it does not represent a vacuum or boost leak. You can connect good old bulk fuel line to the fitting and run it back to the diaphram near the brake booster. It will run better that way, and the air will be a little cleaner.

Does that connect to the fuel vapor control, look at the red arrows showing from that metal pipe all the way to the fuel vapor control unit in the below pic:

That's exactly right - the line in question goes from the j-boot to the fuel vapor purge system (I just didn't know the name of it before). The hose is maybe 1/2" O.D. Hope this helps everyone.

Anyway, you can get that hose locally, but at LEAST plug that hole, the j-boot sucks in air to the compressor for the turbocharger, ANYTHING getting in there euqals no fun, no fun at all

If you haven't noticed, that metal pipe can rotate in the hole where it plugs into the J-boot. Rotate it upwards and you should be able to push the hose onto it.

Yah, that's how I got mine re-connected last night before the whole exploding turbo escapade. Forgot to mention it in my slightly-distracted anguish. It's a bit tight to get in there unless you have tiny hands, but it's do-able. I recommend the engine / coolant being cold because you're right next to the coolant reservoir. I suppose long-nose pliers might be of some use in that spot, particulaly ones with 90-degree bent tips, such as a lot of people (myself included) use to hold the balance shafts stationary when removing the rollers.
