The thicker the heatsink; the better;the larger the heatsink the better. I will do a test this weekend using your setup and post the results.

Another factor: Are you going to use thermal compound (heat sink compound) between the resistor and the heatsink? This will effect the heat transfer.

I was planning to mount them to a 5mm piece of aluminum along with a dab of thermal paste that comes with CPU cooling fans.

NZ951.......from what I can see of your pic there are 4 resistors there, I thought only two were needed??

Hey beab,

I have a feeling I may owe you money for a favour? Maybe posting me something from ages ago? Any ideas?

I am not using a computer controller as such, I may not be answering your question here... I am using a stand alone Link Plus computer.

Brian, I doubled checked and the resistors are mounted on a 2 1/2" x 3 1/4" x 1/8" plate now, I can go up to a 4" x 5 1/4 x 3/8" if that would be better.

Do I need heat sink paste ?

Thanks for your help,

No worries, Able is just a great few day easy walk to get you into it. The snowy mountain southern ranges are amazing. But too many idiots are getting caught out in conditions they were not prepared for.

NZ951 We have a couple of serious climbers (+27K) in our grourp. I think they are nuts but go figure,

Dave, I will do the tests and get back to you. Bottom line is bigger is better.

David.........are you going to solder or use spade connectors?
IMHO the 1/8" looks kinda skimpy.......I am planning on using 5mm aluminum sheet. Are you going to mount the heat sink aluminum to anything, or does it just "float" around in there?
