Tips is if your doing the balance shaft seal, do the cam ones as well, replace those rollers/tensioners while your at it.
Even better, if you pump has 40K+ miles on it, replace it too since most of that stuff would come out.
I was doing a waterpump replacement job, until my specialist advised me to replace everything in the front.
Front seals
Belts, rollers, tenioners
Water Pump
Thermostate with seal
Turbocharger Thermostat
It would svae you $$$ in the future..........just my opinion

If you mean the front seals, they are a breeze to do, don't have to touch anything that he mentioned except the balance shaft belt itself. Yes do them in car, it'll take you under 2 hours and probably under 1. If all the balance shaft seals, then you still don't have to touch anything he mentioned, but it'll take longer.

Make sure you put the correct seal in the correct housing. Seals are directional and if you confuse them, you'll guarantee yourself a big oil leak.

I've paid to have the front of my engine R&R'ed three times. Do yourself a favor and replace everything while you're in there. If the seals are leaking, you've probably trashed the belts anyway. The only thing left is the WP and if it's got some miles on it it's worth doing. Good luck and enjoy

To elaborate a bit on a point Michelle made, a leaking seal will make a belt deteriorate very quickly. So much so that the time intervals specified in the manuals are not longer valid. So whenever you're in there, check the seals and if one is leaking, it's probably time to do them all.

If your rear seal is leaking, pull the cover and cap and replace the o-ring. That is also a fairly common leak. Also might want to look behind the cam tower cover and see if that nasty rear cork gasket is leaking as well. Best of luck, I think you have enough info here to do it succesfully.

I thought it looked like it was viable, is it worth changing all the seals in the balance shaft even if it is just the front seeping? My car was stood for some time whilst I was overseas. When I returned I changed Water pump all belts tensioners rollers even new balance shaft gears as they were only about $9.00 each through a local source. The engine had always been dry but after using the car for a few miles the leak started. It usually happens that way! It is a small leak but still annoying as it can only get worse!

My 1986 944 only had the front o-ring leak - I'd just replace the front seals and o-rings (all part of the standard "front seal" kit) as well as the little bearing sleeve that gets a groove worn into it. Look at Lindsey Racing's kit for pics of each part I'm referring to. There's zero reason to go opening up the balance shaft housing if it's not leaking.
