What is the normal EGT on #4 durring

idle

I just put in a VDO EGT and built a 3 gauge carbon fiber pannel for the stash tray. will fill the other holes with water and oil temp.

Typically I see 1500F at light load crusing. Keep in mind that the light load temps can be higher than full throttle temps – at light loads the system will be running leaner than at high load.
The 951 tec3 car gets to 1650F on the track.
On of my other Porsche project cars (930) just set a new record….He has a tec3 running the ignition only – the fuel system will be done this winter. We added a Zeitronic Zt-2 with EGT for testing. We knew his CIS was out of whack – but 9:1 fuel and 1000c EGT was pretty impressive. (1850f)!!!

Cruising I get 1400

Load (full throttle and above 6800rpms) ; I get 1550-1600F

Last time I melted the engine with the overboost : above 1600F

The result of that last overboost was obviously overheat. This in turn caused my spark plug ceramic liners(NGK R) to break and pit the top of the number piston, and nick the tubine blades.

NGK, specificaly specifies , that their plugs should not be operated above 1555F, at which point the ceramic will simply break loose...... and cause some engine and turbo damage.

What I'm going to do , before the next event, is to put a buzzer on my EGT gauge, so that if it does reach 1600F, I will know before it's too late.

Why would you need a EGT?

To measure your exhaust gas temperature. Egt gauges are not only good for knowing when the engine is running lean, but also when your timing is off (to much retard will cause high egts).

If you have a wide band and an EGT, you pretty much can tune the car correctly.

OK, so let me be the dumb one here, how/where do you put the sensor for the EGT? I am going to a testpipe in the next spring so just wondering since I will be in the area.

Mine's the same as the rest of you. 1200-1400F normal cruising. 1550F at constant high speed full tilt.
