Default A/C update kit

Has anyone tried the R134 update kit from 944online? It has a new line, drier, compressor and a few other things.

Does it just bolt right up in place of the stock stuff? Does it work good? Does everything look likes it belongs?

944online is not the only place that sells such kits.

I don;t know how are th elaws and regulations are for the US, but here, the R-12 and R134 gases are more/less fine with everyone.

For more places that sell such products:

What's wrong with your current set-up? I ask b/c my stock A/C system is now using R-134a and working great. Besides, you have to cut your OEM A/C hoses in order to use that retro kit, which is a no-going-back situation.

My a/c has also died, it does have a leak, so I don't think a recharge will do much good. I have a couple cans of R12, but would just leak out.

You folks that made the switch to R134, did you do it yourself ?

I've heard those updated kits with the new compressor are not bolt-in and require some modification. Do a search for more info.

I did a full blown conversion that consisted of:

New expansion valve (more on this later)
New drier
Another OEM compressor (my original one siezed)
Flushed Condensor and straightened out the fins
Flushed Evaporator and cleaned the fins
Flushed all hoses
All new o-rings
Nylog on all o-rings and connections

Pulled a vacuum for about an hour, twice, letting the system sit overnight to see if it held the vacuum.

Charged R-134a according to pressure and vent temps and ended up putting about 24ozs of that stuff in the system.

I'll do a write up if you guys want. Oh, and my 86 MY car uses an expansion valve that's different than the ones most of our favorite vendors sell. I had to special order it from Griffiths.

Griffiths also sells a kit that comes with the high pressure hose assembly. I've heard some less than great stuff about the 944 online one and I'm probably going to go with the Griffiths kit. My compressor is seized so I'm pretty much in the hole of having to do something with that anyway.

Seeing that those kits cost ~$500 and that my retrofitted A/C is working fine, I would spend the money on tools and fix your OEM system.

But then again, my A/C has only been working for a day, so I can't say that it'll last forever.

last year I installed a Kuehl compressor and serpentine tube condenser from Griffiths (43 deg. vent temp. with 95 deg. outside temp. thankyou very much). The compressor kit comes complete with mounting hardware, hose assemblies, drier, and belt, the condenser is a separate item. Installation was bolt-in although you do have to cut a splice the high pressure line. Not a cheap conversion but well worth the money compared to the S. Texas summer.

The compressor is not smooth when rotated by hand, but the A/C clutch is gone for sure. The A/C was cooling good before but still operating with R-12. 944online owes for a core charge on A-arms...so we were leaning towards that kit.....unless anyone has a better idea for fixing the A/C. Also, have any of you tried the R-12A?

That's my Dad's car needing the compressor...mine is working okay, but is still using R-12 and the drier window is looking cloudy.....should I go back with R-12 or what?

I have one of the 944online kits I'll sell you for $250. I fixed my a/c so don't need it. Just needed o-rings.
